Re: Missing hiker

Did you go over there, David? Did the area match your expectations? More theories?

Found the trip report from the 1970s. It says 1971 and not 1974, but the people involved are the same. Could this be about the same trip?

Re: Sierra Club Presentation

It was pretty great! Felt like a night at the Adventurers' Club in some ways. The big takeaways are

- The Angeles Chapter of the Sierra Club historian (Bob Cates) went through a tons of old photos and various materials
- He digitized a ton of photos; they live here: https://www.flickr.com/photos ...

Another late update: I tracked down the graffiti-er. Looks like he stopped being a delinquent shortly after this regrettable incident.

Pleasant View Ridge, C-119, C-46a

David Martin and his wife are about to go to Asia for a while, and I wanted to drag them out to see a plane crash before they left. Mission accomplished.

We went to see the C-119 on Pleasant View ridge ( the previous report ). And I wanted to get the extra credit of seeing the C-46a tail again ...

Navy SNJ-52009

In 1947 a Navy SNJ crashed around Dalton Canyon somewhere. Both people onboard walked away from it with no injuries. I recently got a hot tip about where it went down (from a letter written by one of the survivors), and went to go check it out.

I was planning on riding up GMR and then GRR to the ...

Re: Missing hiker

If you could choose just one "method" of telling the public where the hiker was last seen, which would you choose?
1. Coordinates.
2. Mile Marker (presumably with out typos and a reference to an official highway, road, street designation). For example Mile mark 56 on State Highway 2 (also known as ...

Cannell plunge

I just rode the Cannell Plunge. It's an MTB route in the Southern Sierra. We took the easy way: shuttle up to Sherman Pass at ~9200ft, ride down to Kernville at ~2800ft. The route rolls a bit, and you gain 2000ft, so you lose over 8k. It's all real pretty and real fun.

We loaded up the bikes in the ...

It's possible, but would require work. And even more work to make it apply only to some users. If somebody wants to take that on, or if one of yall can find some phpbb extension that does this, I'm happy to facilitate.

Thanks for the report. I guess this is between the deserty and the really-high-mountain sections? How far to the south to the no-trees desert areas, and the other way to the snowy peaks?

Well that was an unexpected obstacle to force this mission to be abandoned! Any way to tell where the poodledog groves are? The last time _kick_rocks_ went to the Triplets, he said the ridge-top was covered with poodle-dog. He took the ridge from East Twin. Presumably most of the area is covered ...

Re: The "common word" rule is making searching difficult

The search thing we're using right now is very simplistic, and treats each word separately: no phrases are supported, which makes it a pain. There are other search backends that maybe would work better, but I haven't gotten around to trying them. In the meantime, google et al work ok, since they ...

Re: Does Spring Camp have water?

That's a common-ish biking loop. I've never seen water anywhere over there, but also I haven't looked for it. My strong suspicion is that this is too high and too close to the ridge-top to have flowing water, but I don't know for certain. Unless you get definitive word from somebody that there is ...
