Re: Exploring Canton Canyon
If you're talking about the trail that goes up to the ridge to point 2187, then that's the one we took. It's the old road (seen clearly in the aerials and the 3DEP lidar data . The roadbed is still there in most places, and is mostly passable. It's kinda cool, but there isn't anything up there. I'd ...

Re: Exploring Canton Canyon
Cool! You should look at this report from earlier this year: https://eispiraten.com/viewtopic.php?t=9058 We went up Canton Canyon a bit, and climbed to the top following an old road on the South side. Then on the return we went up Canton a bit further to check out the abandoned property. The cows ar...

Thanks for posting! How much knowledge/experience do you have about gauging avy risk? You talked about this a bit, but in retrospect, do you feel like you maybe should have gone at a different time? Would more knowledge/experience have helped?

Re: Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge by an Ice Pirate
The great thing about the West ridge of Strawberry is that it's easy enough for anyone to do it. Different people will have a different sense of how death-defying the thing is, but it's all doable. Glad yall finally got out there!

Re: Guess that peak
If I'm following correctly, your software generates the silhouette profile based on coordinates you feed it (wich is very cool) ....but then how did you first figure out my position? Good old-fashioned human visual recognition? It would take a lot more work to automate the search; doable, but work....

Clearly you were on point 3650: 34.36023,-118.36489. I tell my fancy software to do this:
and I get the attached.
Code: Select all

Mount Wilson from middle Eaton Canyon
Yesterday I climbed Mount Wilson from Eaton Canyon, a bit above Idlehour. The idea was to pick a side drainage, and follow the creek as much as possible, ending up somewhere at the summit area, with a victory coffee at the Cosmic Cafe. It worked! The river has falls https://gal.secretsauce.net/trave...

The Death Valley Albatross
Peak summer is behind us, so Death Valley is visitable again. I just went over there to check out the Albatross . I started walking in the morning from Towne pass. You should do some laps. I like the Lone Tree trail a lot, and one lap up to Muir Peak is 3k. Lots of different trail options for the descent. Repeat as necessary.

Alamo Peak from Lockwood Valley Road
Years ago I tried to summit Cobblestone Peak with some people. We drove from Hungry Valley to the end of the road by Sewart peak, started the hike, and then hiked White Mountain instead for some reason. I think it the weather was weird or something? I don't recall. But I do recall the road we drove ...

The road from above is clearly seen in the magic high-resolution DEM map:
No clear roads or trails below that. Were you looking for something specific? Or are you exploring every single canyon?

So sad to see the trees on Granite and Round Top gone. Here's a picture of Granite taken from Round Top 15 years ago...
