Re: Forest Service to Park Service

I haven't noticed any difference at all: authority figures are as absent as they have always been, and I haven't seen any new aspirational rules. Maybe there's some plan, but I doubt it.

Here's another high-res MAXAR image. From the morning of the 10th. Shows the areas further north. Some stuff was still burning at the time, so not complete, but should be close.

Re: Eaton Fire

The new imagery is available from Matthew's link or paid caltopo ("Sentinel Weekly"). Or just click here. Conclusions as before: most places toasted. Bottoms of canyons and north-facing slopes did much better.

Found post-event (Jan 10) imagery from Altadena and some of the mountains: https://soar.earth/maps/2025-los-angeles-wildfires-10-jan-2025-107279?basemap=OpenStreetMaps&pos=34.18900524530363%2C-118.11496414528641%2C18.35 Altadena looks devastated. What happened at Chantry last night (2025/01/01)?

I rode up to the San Olene water tank at ~7pm yesterday. From the tank I could see the chopper flying in the canyon, shining its lights on the Lower Clamshell rd. On the descent I rode by the chopper sitting on the helipad, blades spinning. Lots of firefighter, SAR folks were congregated at the end ...

Re: East Mermaid via SE Ridge

My tracker says 10mi/2400ft gain. It's a slow-progress kinda place, so the stats almost don't matter. We were out for 7.5 hours.

Wow. That big loop around the mountain looks excellent. I wouldn't mind checking out the East ridge of Cobblestone at some point. The abandonment of the LPNF really is impressive.

Re: Cobblestone mountain from Ant Camp

Here's the caltopo link from my route planning, with the extra road walk added. If I ask caltopo for the profile, it says 6142' gain, 1836' loss. This comes from sampling the elevation maps, so I would expect this to be a slight underestimate of the true effort (because in reality I didn't follow ...

Sean wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 11:19 am How is it 9000 gain?
Great question. The net gain is more like 4500ft, but there's a LOT of up/down. The "true" number is mostly unknowable. Strava thinks it's 8k, and maybe that's correct. Who knows.

Cobblestone mountain from Ant Camp

So I'm trying to get to Cobblestone mountain. The usual approach from Sewart peak isn't an option because of the Post fire. I tried to approach from the West , but that route is laughably rough and un-bikeable. That leaves the approach from the South as the only remaining route that I've heard of ...

Cool report. How do you think this was accessed by the cabin owners? Surely they didn't scramble around the falls each time they went up there.

Re: Exploring Canton Canyon

If you're talking about the trail that goes up to the ridge to point 2187, then that's the one we took. It's the old road (seen clearly in the aerials and the 3DEP lidar data . The roadbed is still there in most places, and is mostly passable. It's kinda cool, but there isn't anything up there.

I'd ...

Cool! You should look at this report from earlier this year: https://eispiraten.com/viewtopic.php?t=9058

We went up Canton Canyon a bit, and climbed to the top following an old road on the South side. Then on the return we went up Canton a bit further to check out the abandoned property. The cows ...

Thanks for posting! How much knowledge/experience do you have about gauging avy risk? You talked about this a bit, but in retrospect, do you feel like you maybe should have gone at a different time? Would more knowledge/experience have helped?

And to those confused, this is about a trip on April 20

The great thing about the West ridge of Strawberry is that it's easy enough for anyone to do it. Different people will have a different sense of how death-defying the thing is, but it's all doable. Glad yall finally got out there!

If I'm following correctly, your software generates the silhouette profile based on coordinates you feed it (wich is very cool) ....but then how did you first figure out my position? Good old-fashioned human visual recognition?

It would take a lot more work to automate the search; doable, but ...
