Re: Stone Canyon Trail to Lukens Update

Matt also contributed a lot of data to openstreetmap, mostly in the mountains. So when yall are looking at strava and whatnot, you're using Matt's work. I've only met Matt once, and it was at a mapping meeing. I never saw him in the mountains, and now I never will, and I'm very sad about that. He ...

I'm doing other things that day. But that area is new to me, and I'd love to see a trip report!

Re: 21 days off, no plans

I was just on Big Pine Mountain. The TDLP route is incredible, but it is rough MTB and is long. Big Pine Mountain itself is meh. I hear West Big Pine is better, but I haven't been there.

Re: Gold Creek to Chatsworth Trails Park, In 4 Segments

Just read this more closely. Cool trip! I see you mentioned the two Nike sites. OSM actually maps them both. The control site is just W of the fire station and the launch site is just E of it. Did the HWD ranch seem in use? Was there signage?

Re: Gold Creek to Chatsworth Trails Park, In 4 Segments

I'm not certain how it worked in this area. But in all the Nike sites I know about the launch and operation facilities were in different spots, separated by a mile or so. Could the antenna site have been the operation facility? Cool report, by the way!

Re: 21 days off, no plans

The dirt road to Usal beach and then up to Timber ridge and then the stuff around Honeydew and the coastal road above Petrolia. Ooof. Now I want to go.

Re: 21 days off, no plans

Honestly, just take the ACA map, and do what it says. This is a very straightforward trip, and you'll have plenty of company in the summer. Remind me, and I can lend you a copy of the map.

Re: Bots and scrapers

Oh man. It's totally right. Previously I had problems with it being too aggressive, banning confirmed humans. I detuned it, but I also adjusted the filter regex. After the more specific regex I can probably tighten it again, but I haven't bothered to do that yet. Feel free to play with it. For what ...

Re: 21 days off, no plans

More favorable winds usually, and you're on the side of the road with better views of the ocean. All that said, I rode it S -> N (because I liked the idea of leaving from my house) and it was glorious

Re: 21 days off, no plans

Yes. All that is correct. I will also say that the CA coast ride north of the bay is better than the ride south of the bay. Think about it. With 21 days you can probably go to Portland, and ride all the way back. It's chill and great and there will be tons of other riders doing it, if you're riding ...

Re: Bots and scrapers

Yeah, Cloudflare or something like it would solve it, but I REALLY don't want to go there yet. We're a location-specific, niche, old-school forum about the mountains. We shouldn't NEED such big hammers to be able to operate. I'm wondering if the recent influx was related to the thread about Monica ...

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

For what it's worth, I chatted with a SAR person that was involved in the search. He didn't know anything about the conspiracies or the drama, and he thought a mountain-lion attack was most likely.

Bots and scrapers

We're having more overloading issues with people's poorly-behaved scripts, and a dumb geoblocker (like I had before) is no longer enough. I just installed fail2ban to kill the worst offenders, and it seems to be doing the job right now. It's possible I tuned it too aggressively: if you see any ...

Re: Tip toe through the PDB: Sunset Peak

Is the trail to Lookout Mountain from Cow Canyon saddle still there? We were on the road up to Sunset Peak a few weeks ago, and I couldn't see it at all. What I could see is that the old RV park property has burned. But it's still full of people shooting guns: it sounded like a full-on firing range ...

Worrying our wives at Red Rock Canyon

This past weekend, I joined wesweswes in doing his favorite thing: multi-pitch trad climbing. We went to Red Rock Canyon, just outside Las Vegas. I dabble in bouldering at the gym, and have done various unwise things in our local mountains, but I'm not really a climber. Wesweswes is a crusher ...

Thanks for the report! Don't know what causes that cool erosion pattern, but I've seen in before. There's a bunch of it a bit W of where you were, in Quatal canyon:
