Re: Retrospective... 3 favorite adventures.
Here's another one that I thought was somewhat scary. It ended up fine, but a committing descent down an unknown canyon with no ropes really makes you pay attention

Re: Alamo mountain the easy way
Yes. So you either go through, to park in the LPNF, or you park near I5, and ride in. I think this should be a good area in the summer, actually: Alamo Mountain is above 7k!

Re: Alamo mountain the easy way
Now that I've checked it out, access seems straightforward, actually. Either of:
Wait until the gate on the back side of hungry valley is open (in a month maybe?), and park on the other side. Then the only thing you can't do is arrive or go home during nighttime
Park in Gorman or Smoky bear rd ...

Alamo mountain the easy way
Earlier I "biked" up to Alamo mountain a really stupid way because the easy way to closed due to the Post fire. But recently I've been hearing rumors that the easy approach is usable again, and I went over there today to check it out. It is indeed much easier, and is quite delightful in fact. I ...

OK. That's a proposal! So somebody is supposed to build a new mountain-project-like website? And why don't we just use mountain-project? Because we want a private thing?

Now this here is a proper trip report! It has everything. A questionable goal, dramatic challenges, heroic perseverance AND a payoff at the end. Glad you got it done!

The 3rd-annual moonlight baldy winter climb
This just happened, and yall missed it. Previously we did this two years ago and last year .
I met Taco in Claremont, we biked up to the Notch-ish, stashed the bikes and climbed up the backbone. Nice weather. Calm at the bottom, super windy up on top. Good-enough snow conditions. The exposed ...

Thanks for the report. Did you start in the Hungry Valley OHV area? Any idea if the Post fire closure is still a thing? Can we go towards Alamo Mtn?

Re: Dillon Divide to Dagger Flat Canyon and Laurel Canyon
Hi. Can you clarify where you went? I think you're saying you started almost by Magic Mountain, dropped down on this old trail to Pacoima canyon, then walked in the canyon downstream towards Dagger Flat . Then you tried to ascend the Dagger Flat trail , which you said barely exists now. Then you ...

Thanks a lot for posting this! I really like how the obviously-made-up cover story of "we went to Graveyard canyon!" doesn't actually work, since that's also in the closure area.

Sweet! This feels like the right way to do it. Was the night-vision tech actually useful here? It's not on anybody's list of 10 essentials

I haven't noticed any difference at all: authority figures are as absent as they have always been, and I haven't seen any new aspirational rules. Maybe there's some plan, but I doubt it.

Here's another high-res MAXAR image. From the morning of the 10th. Shows the areas further north. Some stuff was still burning at the time, so not complete, but should be close.

The new imagery is available from Matthew's link or paid caltopo ("Sentinel Weekly"). Or just click here. Conclusions as before: most places toasted. Bottoms of canyons and north-facing slopes did much better.

What happened at Chantry last night (2025/01/01)?
I rode up to the San Olene water tank at ~7pm yesterday. From the tank I could see the chopper flying in the canyon, shining its lights on the Lower Clamshell rd. On the descent I rode by the chopper sitting on the helipad, blades spinning. Lots of firefighter, SAR folks were congregated at the end ...
