Those mines are very cool. I don't know the history, but you will be hearing from jeko1034 shortly :)

Re: The Fake Mt. Fuji

I put some pink ribbons at the pole of inaccessibility, and the sun bleached them white in a year. If these are still orange, maybe they're still recent? Could somebody be doing some maintenance over there?

Desert sand beetle

The last time I was at Kelso dunes I regretted not taking this photo. I came back just now, and mostly got what I wanted:

Hopefully will do even better next time.

Granite pass boulders

A few years ago Taco, Danny and I did a glorious bike ride through the Mojave . After watching the sun set from the Kelso dunes, we started a cold and never-ending climb up to Granite pass, followed by a FRIGID night in a ditch, off the side of the road. Much later I found out that we could have ins...

Pisgah lava tubes

This past weekend Sondra and I headed to the Mojave, to spend some time in the desert before it gets too hot. First on the agenda was to check out the Pisgah lava tubes. I've known of these for a while, and would make a mental note to visit every time I'd race past the lava field on I-40. We finally...

Nice trip! Did you walk the old fire road back to henninger? It passable through that whole section?

You found a potato bug. Terrifying if they get into your house, but mostly harmless.

Cool. Looking forward to more trip reports from that area! I've seen much of the West Fork bear creek, but I've never been up the main branch of Bear Creek above where the trail comes in, and clearly I need to get out there.

Pretty! How far are you planning on going when you come back? Any particular goal? I've been up to where the main channel of West Fork Bear creek turns N, but I think AW has gone much further up. It's wild back there.

Re: Kagel Canyon rd: access

Oh, and the assessor used to have the owner names and tax payment info on the website, but they now omit it. I believe the info is still public, but you must go to the office to access it, or get it in some other way. Caltopo pro accounts get a "parcels" layer that includes the owner names...

Yeah, I did that! One of the links in my post is that. The assessor doesn't have separate parcels for the roads, which makes me conclude that the roads cannot be private. Is that right?

Kagel Canyon rd: access

I just biked another tourist race. Didn't take many photos, and there's a lot less to say about it than the last time. But I did go to some new-to-me places, and have questions. I entered the forest on Kagel Canyon Rd . This is paved quite far up, and feels unlike any other area of the mountains. Th...

Re: 38th birthday Oat Mountain from the north attempt

Looks fun! Sorry I missed it. tekewin: what's the access situation on Brown's canyon rd? Did you have to pass a "private property" sign to get to your parking spot? And where were you supposed to pay the $5? And are hikers technically allowed on Oat Mountain Motorway and Palo Sola Motorway...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

OSM is the dataset used by everyone who isn't google or apple. It is publically sourced, and doesn't suck everywhere you can't sell advertising. I added some of these routes, but didn't have complete info, so the mapped route is just a straight line in places (as you say). This is noted in the datas...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

The waterfall is near the bottom of Forbush trails which I took when returning toward Camino Cielo from Little Caliente Excellent. Thanks not including the rerouting of the trail to avoid most the Mono Jungle (not in Google Maps yet - likely doesn't add much) The routes should all be in openstreetm...

Looks nice! It's the time to be over there. The images of the snow-covered Panamints towering over badwater basin with an actual lake in it are amazing. No photos of Barstow for contrast? And what's wrong with the road W of Amboy? Is it the same deal as E of Amboy? To place images in-line, look for ...

Yeah. Now that I look at Uncle Rico's map again, I believe it. The medium-hit areas (yellow in his map) are clearly clustered, and not distributed randomly. So they're displaying some real effect. Interesting!

According to both of these, there's a ton of variability from spot to spot. Do we know if it actually does vary this much? Measurement error?

Here's what the county rain gauges say:

(from the LADPW site). Apparently the San Gabriels didn't get as drenched as the Hollywood hills.
