This looks generic, but we're looking at 2 named peaks AND a benchmak.

Re: Guess the trail name!

I've been on the ridge S and N or Lookout, and it wasn't burnt. Caltopo says there was a fire in 2008 below, towards Bear Flat, so maybe that's where that was. In any case, it's the same "trail". Check this out:

It's obvious where I am, but what trail am I on? No cheating!

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

My recollection is that the Station Fire exploded in size on day 2 or day 3, and then just kept slowly going for a month. The last few weeks were in the San Gabriel Wilderness somewhere, so they weren't trying too hard to put it out. The bobcat fire... TBD!

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

..... Likewise, we need a radical policy of firing hillsides and canyons, before they become an existential danger to human life and property. Or we could make a radical policy of not building homes in areas that are prone to burning. I'm guessing the price of fire insurance has jumped in the last ...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

The immediate cause doesn't really matter. Currently the conditions in all of the Western US are very favorable to fires, so if it wasn't Edison, it would have been something else. Lightning. Or a gender reveal. Or a vehicle. Better forest management and more rain would have helped...

The Santa Anas blow to the South, which would push the Northern front back towards the already-burned areas, right?

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

Caltopo is now saying pretty convincingly that buckhorn is/was burning. AND that another large front is headed towards Chilao from the South. Anybody want to guess where the North front will stop? There's no longer any obvious boundary, or human structures where the firefighters will make a stand. T...

It's not on fire yet. Those orange blobs on the road are people/vehicles thankfully. I just looked at the photos again. Click on the second one to get the full size. That looks a whole lot like fire. Maybe a little flare-up or something. Haven't see any like it for a little bit. Hopefully they'll t...

Re: Heaton Flat to Baldy summit loop up Big Horn Ridge and down San Antonio Ridge - trip report and photos

I want to say that I looked up that old trail on the old aerials, and it didn't climb the ridge. Rather it traversed over to cattle canyon, and then up to cow saddle. I think.

Making tapatalk suck a little bit less

As some of you maybe noticed, just looking at a post (ANY tapatalk post) is a very computationally-intensive activity. On my machine it eats up ~ 1/3 of a full core, which wastes power, and makes my laptop toasty warm, and less responsive to other tasks. This is just me looking at an already-loaded ...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

So I'm hazy on the intent here. The last few days the fire was slowly creeping down the hillside. I don't know how difficult putting these out really is, but this thing was moving SO slowly. It couldn't be put out before burning Chantry Flat, and now threatening Mt Wilson? Was it the plan to fight i...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

I just figured out how to get flightradar24 to give you altitudes, which you can use to figure out where the tankers made their drops (the plane descends, makes the drop, and then climbs back up). On the most recent pass it dropped right around the ridge-top E of buckhorn. That makes me think it has...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

The red dots are very accessible and easily interpretable, but not entirely correct sometimes. Do you mean that the satellite misdetected fire activity? We're talking about the imprecise satellite fire reports on caltopo, I think. AW had a good point: if you select specific satellites, it tells you...

Hah. Yeah. How dare they. Something definitely IS going on in that area right now. AIRATT52 is flying back and forth in an arc: Twin Peaks, Waterman, Buckhorn, Islip, Windy Gap
