Re: Old newspapers: drama above Pasadena

So we have a (very slow) trial. Did they find gold? Do we keep our railroad? A year later, the case was resolved. On 1905/10/19 the LA times (page 17) said 1905-10-19.jpg They didn't find gold in "sufficient quantities", so the claims were invalidated, and we got to keep our railroad! This...

Re: Old newspapers: drama above Pasadena

It describes Mrs. Griffith's divorce application from Mr. Griffith (the "Griffith Park" guy) after he shot her in the face. The divorce was granted in record time. There's a city park (and observatory!) that needs renaming. I propose Bad Hubby Park (and Bad Hubby Observatory). Heh. Yeah. ...

Re: Old newspapers: drama above Pasadena

So apparently the railway was already built and operating at this time, which makes this whole episode even more ballsy. The issue was that Pacific Electric hasn't bothered to survey the rights-of-way. Anywho, on 1904/07/10, the LA times (page 13) talked to the miners' lawyer, who said that they wan...

Re: Old newspapers: drama above Pasadena

So the future sounded bright, but there was a problem. A careful reader would note that the mining claims overlap some parts of the Mt. Lowe railway. This wasn't yet constructed, but the land was acquired, and plans were made. The railway right-of-way was granted by Congress, but any conflicting min...

Also, the photo of me walking up did something funny with the colors: it makes it appear like there was lots of snow in the bowl on the right. Most of the white areas are sunlit rocks, not snow.

Nice artistic sunset photo!

This was awesome. Not a ton of snow left, but we did find some mostly-untouched lines on the far left of the bowl, almost at the trail.

Re: Old newspapers: drama above Pasadena

As expected, the Angels Gold Mining Company filed some gold mining claims, 3 years after incorporating. On 1904/07/09 the LA evening express (page 19) had this to say: 1904-07-09--1.jpg Super! The plat maps are available from the LA department of public works: https://pw.lacounty.gov/smpm/landrecord...

I just stumbled on something really interesting. This will take a few posts. First, this happened:

What did this Angels Gold Mining Company do? Find out in the next post!

Re: Google Earth Find -- Mines or otherwise?

Oh, and the buildings in the imagery are actually known to the assessor (and hence appear on the osm map). They are: https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/472888467 https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/472888201 The assessor's IDs and the building IDs are there. I doubt these are mines. Are there cattle or...

Re: Google Earth Find -- Mines or otherwise?

These are just outside of the Forest Service land, so my guess it's some part of the ranch-looking-thing to the South. These buildings aren't there on the 1959 aerials, but do appear on the 1968 aerials, with a road from the South. Caltopo doesn't list the land to the South as being a private inhold...

Old newspaper article of the day! Shoemaker canyon road

Pasadena Star-News. 1957/6/30. Describes the in-progress and not-yet-abandoned road to Vincent Gap high above the East Fork. At article time, they were cutting the first tunnel. The plans were grand, and the whole project was supposed to take 20 years. I also like the full-page leading photo. highwa...

Re: More of Bichota canyon

I want to say the metal ones are more expensive and far heavier. The plastic ones do work quite well, though. Branches about 1" in diameter go easy. This time I tried to cut something that was maybe 1.5", and I had to push hard to break it. Lesson learned.

According to the 1937/10/25 issue of the LA times, the East Fork is better than the ditch in Arizona in almost every way:

Re: More of Bichota canyon

These were the indeed the lightweight Fiskars ones. I don't feel right complaining about this: I tried to cut a branch that was too thick, and broke the plastic anvil. These weren't new, and served me well, and I'm ok giving them another $20.
