Re: Camp Huntington Road Gate

Tragic. Just so that I'm clear, where's the gate, exactly? It's not on Loma Alta, but a bit inside? Is it gating off the house or the water company stuff? Is going around the gate the "recommended" approach would you say? You could instead start on the Altadena crest trail, a bit E of ther...

Re: Red Box --> Switzer --> Colby Canyon --> Strawberry Peak --> Red Box

No hiking related, but ice cream stands used to be popular in Moscow in the winter. When it's really cold outside the ice cream is firm, so you can bite off chunks of it, and it doesn't make a mess. Definitely a good idea.

Re: Baldy zen resort

The mouth of Cattle Canyon is public land, so they'd need a permit from the ANF. The Cow Canyon saddle area is private, so they could do whatever. caltopo has a layer to see that, for the curious.

Re: MRCA parking ticket

I'm pretty sure that's WCA land. It has to be more than that. The ticket says I violated an "MRCA park ordinance", not a part of the state vehicle code, or anything like that. If the MRCA was just issuing tickets on behalf of somebody else, they'd need to charge me with breaking that some...

MRCA parking ticket

I did a thing from the bottom of Barrett-Stoddard road the other day (just S of Baldy village). The little parking lot was full, so I parked in the big turnout on Baldy rd across the street. When I got back, there was a parking ticket waiting for me. Apparently the whole turnout was a no parking zon...

Barrett-Stoddard rd, Cucamonga Truck Trail

Today I took the mountain bike to see how much of the Cucamonga Truck Trail is passable, since there're rumors that it's being worked on . I've never been on most of Barrett-Stoddard road either, so I figured I'd start there, instead of the shorter option in Cucamonga Canyon. Alright, so initially B...

This was a confusing post for me. There actually already is a "zen center" up there: it's just below Manker Flat. THIS is an entirely different thing, it looks like.

Ah, thanks for that. It wasn't clear which coords were which. He wasn't very far down that ridge. It still took a while to get there, probably!

Re: SAR Seeking Help Identifying Location In Photo

I just looked at the coords a bit more closely. He wasn't on Triplet ridge, I think. The twitter dude's photo match puts him on the next ridge to the North, approaching point 5461. He was going for a first ascent!

Re: SAR Seeking Help Identifying Location In Photo

So if he was on the Triplet ridge, then the photo is facing North? It sorta looks like two drainages are converging to the left, but I guess it's actually the opposite. Or is he not facing North?

Have you gone up there to see how it is recently? Last time you asked, somebody replied, saying they've been clearing the route. So maybe it's doable now, at least partly?

The Burrito express

Today I hiked up Burrito Peak (point 2510, SW of Burro peak). Had vague plans to keep going to Burro and beyond, but it was hot, and I wasn't feeling it. Starting at the Rincon fire station made the most sense. They had angry-looking no-trespassing signs, though, so I started at the OHV area instead...

Re: What’s in your emergency kit?

I saw one of those TV survival stories about a similar incident (might have been that exact incident, actually). I got the sense that the woman learned the wrong lesson. At the end she was really thankful to god for being rescued. I feel like it would be more productive to thank SAR, and to get a cl...

Oh, not quite. She told family she was leaving, but not where she was going. And it took days to figure out what part of the forest she was in. Sad story.

Re: Death near Mt. Waterman

My understanding is that this woman didn't tell anybody where she was going, so she was reported missing days after she got lost. And then a storm came in. That's a lesson for the rest of us.

The best official word is the map stonehillnews transcribed from the ANF order: https://caltopo.com/m/9KEQ It clearly shows that E of Three Points the PCT is closed, but I have heard that some things (the road for instance) are open past where they claim. No idea what the actual conditions are. Has ...
