That gate was always overly fortified for some reason. Jeff: there are other access points that are more siege-prone

Almost. This prospect goes back just a few feet. Whoever dug it lost interest quickly, and the hole tapers quickly. You missed the turnoff too? I totally did that. I also missed the exit to the 138, and had to tag Hesperia.

Re: EisPiraten's Grilled Cheese Anniversary Hike to Wright Mtn

Thanks for setting this up, Sean. Here's a few photos I took. I climbed to the top of Gobbler's Knob at the beginning. There's a bullet-ridden triangular post there. This is also the only point in the day when Baldy was visible. It was hidden behind Dawson peak at all other times. https://gal.secret...

Yeah, that sounds right. Just checking :) The one time we tried to ride the dirt part of 3N06, it felt just rough enough to not be worth the effort. But we were also tired

Yo. How much of 3N06 did you ride and how much did you walk? After the pavement ends at the shooting range? And what about the trail up to Windy Gap? Can you climb that thing on your bike?

Re: East Fork land grabbers get the go-ahead

Fine by me. I get all the arguments about this being a public forest, and that limiting the public is thus wrong. But there's clearly too much demand here, and the forest service should be doing SOMETHING (this sorta thing is why we have a forest service; if there was infinite forest, it wouldn't ne...

Re: East Fork land grabbers get the go-ahead

I might need a summary of a summary. From what I think I just read: - This is about East Fork Rd, from the confluence, all the way to Heaton Flat - There are 48 official parking spots, with total room for ~417 cars, in the official spots and along the road - People are gross, and make a huge mess. Re: Questions about West Fork NRT, Rincon OHV Route, and Bear Canyon Trail

You've ridden Rincon after the fire, or before? David: I would expect the Bear Canyon trail IN THE CANYON to be hard-closed right now: the fire hit that drainage hard. Normally that trail is medium-overgrown, and crosses the creek constantly. From the Valley of the Moon trailhead on the 39 it maybe ...

Re: Tools for bushwhacking in the Gabes?

That's lots of info. Thanks. I'll probably buy one of those tools you mentioned. And since I've gone through several pairs of the fiskars loppers, I guess I can provide more detail. They're cheap and shockingly light and work really well. As Taco mentioned, they work much better with live plants tha...

Re: Tools for bushwhacking in the Gabes?

Yeah, those loppers are good, but they're kinda slow. You need to cut each branch individually, which takes time. I use these if clearing a trail I know I'll be coming back to. If it's a one-time bushwhack, though, I generally just push through. Taco uses a machete of some sort.

Re: Baldy summit on a bike

That all sounds right. After thinking about this for a few more days, I think the biggest issue was Taco's underbiking. I could ride enough of this thing to not get too angry at it, and it felt attainable with enough skill, so working on it was fun almost. But it's unforgiving to a lesser bike, so a...

Baldy summit on a bike

I don't think of myself as a "mountain biker", but I've been doing more of that recently. And this was a trip to be able to make that claim. I started riding on Wed night in central LA. The MTB is clearly slower than a road bike, but it's really not that bad: I was averaging 17-18mph on th...
