Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?

My understanding is that it's not officially user-serviceable, but it's not too much of a pain. I clearly didn't do enough research before this purchase :)

Re: Plane wreck below the ski hut

That's the tail from one of the Hellcats in upper Goode Canyon (same indicent as bcrowell's link above). Here's Joe Idoni's photo of the same chunk: https://joeidoni.smugmug.com/Aircraft-C ... -555G4Kw/A Go to the saddle between Baldy and West Baldy, drop straight down into Goode Canyon, and they're...

If they can't figure out how to get GPS and Iridium comms to work reliably, I wouldn't worry too much about surveillance :)

Re: Upper Eaton Canyon

Old newspapers tell me that the main airplane wreckage is (was?) in "Castlerock canyon". Anybody know which one that is? I've never see this name outside of those old LA Times articles.

Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?

Are PLBs supposed to be better? I never saw any clear statement about that one way or another. I have a resqlink that I used to carry with me, but it no longer is able to get a GPS fix at my house (for testing), so I got this inreach to replace it. It also can't get a GPS fix at my house... Friend w...

Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?

OK, I used this again today in Eaton Canyon. It's not good. No idea if it's worse than other devices on the market, but on its own, it's bad. GPS reception is spotty. On the way back up the canyon I had the InReach turned on to see if it could maintain a GPS lock. It couldn't at all, while my cheapo...

Upper Eaton Canyon

I went to Upper Eaton canyon today. The plan was to start at Eaton Saddle, drop in around the tunnel, and walk around. For some reason, Red Box rd was closed, so I started at Red Box instead, and walked the road, for an additional ~2.5 miles each way. Whatever. It was threatening to rain all day, an...

Off the N fork of the San Gabriel river. Nowhere near Eaton. wakenorm: there are a number of posts about Bichota. Can you read those? They might answer your question.

Thanks for the report, David. That's awesome! How "normal" is this ride for you over there? Is the place full of cool roads through jungles to temples?

Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?

I'd say this device is for rescue and for communication only. I wouldn't use it for mapping or navigation or anything like that. It looks like it's not amazing for rescue and comm, though. I might simply be expecting too much, though.

InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?

So I got one of these fancy new devices after a friend had a nasty crash a few weeks back. Today I had some business in Eaton Canyon, so I brought it, and tried it out. It's... not amazing? I was in a canyon, and there was tree cover. But it wasn't particularly narrow, or jungly. It's the sorta plac...

Re: 20220122 Telegraph Peak NWF - Admins Gone Wild

I didn't go back to the mountains today. Didn't feel like getting up super duper early for a second day in a row. Should see if naptime.com needs an admin. This was one of the windiest mountain days I can remember. It was worst in the saddles (at the Notch and between Thunder and Telegraph), but not...

How to hike San Gabriel peak at night in 1912

No shocking new info in this LA times article (1912/06/09 page 105), I just like the detail.

Baldy bowl: 2022/01/08

Taco, Sondra and I went up to climb Baldy Bowl on Saturday. It's nice, everything is pretty, and the conditions are good. Temps are relatively warm, so the snow is mostly soft and grippy. There's a hard crust in a few places. Some avy debris, but I didn't see any moving pinwheels. This place is POPU...

Re: Shoes for bushwhacking/rugged trails

I'm using HiTec Mount Diablos now. They're about the fanciest thing at Big5, and cost ~ $70. I'm seeing them work about as well as the $200 shoes at REI: they're comfortable, but don't last very long if you're doing a lot of bushwhacking. I haven't found anything that does. I'm OK with spending $$$ ...

Rubio canyon

We had a break in the rain yesterday, so Sondra, Wes, Kevin and I went out to Rubio Canyon to check out the waterfalls. It didn't disappoint. This is a loop I really like, and usually end up walking it every year. It tops out at Echo Mountain, which is quite popular, obviously. But both the ascent a...

If you're on the trail, I think there're some steep areas as you climb out of the drainage to the saddle. If you're off the trail, you can slide further :)

To the left of Markham (the big flat-top one) you're looking into the ridge that has Occidental and Wilson. So it's the W edge of the Occidental ridge.

Thanks for posting! I've biked up to (and camped at) the Mattole river mouth, and did a little hike to the light house over there. Was always wondering what it's like past there. Looks awesome. Is there a coast route South of Shelter Cove all the way to Usal Beach? I biked the dirt forest road that ...

Nice! I think I've done this many many years ago. Don't remember anything about it. Do you have a sense of whether this had more shade, but it all burned down semi-recently? Or is this just how it is?
