Re: Dead Animals
Oh, and thanks for the photos. How do you know the smaller ones were prairie dogs? Do they have some identifying features? Rodents all look kinda similar.

Re: Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs
I can move this thing away from tapatalk, but just don't have the time to do it right now. If somebody wants to work with me on that, it would help dramatically. There are multiple ways we can approach it, with different amounts of labor required. The more labor-intensive methods would produce a bet...

Re: Sierra High Route
I've heard of it! A few years ago we biked the short version of the Tour de Los Padres (140 hard miles instead of 280 hard miles). Riders for both routes started together, and the routes finished in the same place also: the longer route went off in the middle to do lots of stuff, before rejoining la...

Re: Iron Fork (not a bike thing)
Went back last weekend. Saw a bear, a few snakes and a scorpion. No flying, biting bugs at all this time. Below the bridge, right where the river leaves the narrows are these ruins on the W side of the canyon: https://gal.secretsauce.net/travels/SanGabriels/2022-06-20--Iron-Fork/R0001382.jpg?variant...

Iron Fork (not a bike thing)
Alternative title: two old men go for a hike MtGoatMan just posted about his trip to Iron Fork . Purely coincidentally, Taco and I just went there too. We made a big loop: started at Crystal Lake, summited South Hawkins, dropped into S. Fork Iron Fork, took that down to the East Fork, then up to Vin...

It's Aluminum. Searching for "agm co 1945" produces multiple hits. The "a" stands for aluminum. It's thick, and probably still usable, actually. Maybe I'll just use it!

Mountain treasure: WW2-era water canteen
I found this cool old canteen in Eaton Canyon last week. It says "A.G.M. Co 1945" on it. The internet tells me that these were issues to military people. A mile or so upstream I found some plane parts last month. The thought was that these came from a 1941 wreck of an AT-6. Initially I tho...

Disgusting! These are Western Fence lizards. They're really common, but apparently only some of them have the cool blue, green spots. Re: Mt. Lawlor Firebreak
Is this the W side of Lawlor, from the Strawberry-Lawlor saddle? The South side is more exciting, as HikeUp says. I climbed Strawberry yesterday, and we hiked the loop around the North side. There're a bunch of people hiking Strawberry. I expected it to be even worse, so it was a pleasant surprise. ...

Re: Looking for a long hike/jog partner, Silver Moc trail single day push
I walked that ridge a few years ago. I think it was a minor bushwhack; nothing terrible. It was also quite short. Could be different now. Also, I could be interested in doing that route with you, but definitely not in April; too much other stuff going on.

Re: Errand Hiking: Mt. Lee and the Wisdom Tree
That's a cool area. It's completely overrun now, but only maybe ~5 years ago it was semi-obscure and nice. There's a much less travelled approach from the North. And you can make a cool public-transit loop out of it: Red line to Universal city, hike up to Cahuenga from the North, then out to Griffit...

Cool trip! What's the official policy right now? You're allowed to drive the ACH and to park on the side of the road, but not to walk anywhere off the road?

Mt Yale P-38 crash site
Today I went back to look for the P-38 that went down in 1944 below Mt Yale and Mt Harvard (Mt Wilson area). This was my 5th trip to find this thing, which is a bit ridiculous. The first 3 times I went to look for this thing were back in 2016. I only found a few parts, and some evidence of a salvage...

Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?
Are PLBs supposed to be better? I never saw any clear statement about that one way or another. I have a resqlink that I used to carry with me, but it no longer is able to get a GPS fix at my house (for testing), so I got this inreach to replace it. It also can't get a GPS fix at my house...
