There's a "lower" Millard? You go to the campground and follow the road downstream? How far does it go?

Wow! Can I play? On Feb 28 1911 a father and his two kids survived a cold night in a blizzard on Monrovia peak (The Los Angeles Times, 1911/03/01):
No wonder, since the place is a death trap (The Los Angeles Times, 1967/03/01):

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
The aerial images aren't amazing, and trees look very much like a house would. The little loop driveway road isn't clearly visible in 1952 and 1959 either, but again, it's not obvious to me. Do you know of a source of historical imagery that's better than this but costs $? I don't want to pay $ for ...

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
The caltopo link? It's http://caltopo.com . Can (among other things) render terrains, which is what I linked to above. I did look at the historic aerials of that house. The image quality is poor, but it looks like the structure wasn't at all there in the 1950s, and appeared with all the additions in...

The power lines are in the right spot too. This is probably it. If you're interested, look through the old aerial imagery to see if the additions disappear as you go back in time: https://mil.library.ucsb.edu/ap_indexes/FrameFinder/
The resolution on those may or may not be high-enough to tell

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
Actually maybe the building is still there. Is it this one from the assessor's photos:
It's facing the correct direction and has the chimney in the right spot. Obviously, if this is the building, there have been a number of additions built over the years, but maybe!

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
Yeah, it's clearly there-ish. Render from today: https://caltopo.com/view#ll=34.4351,-11 ... 6.36,50.41 The hill is at the center of the render. The darker thing above it in the original photo is "Black butte". The lighter stuff to the right of that is the "Three sisters". Zoom o...

Re: *October Sierra Bike Tour - Part 2: Mineral King, Santa Cruz, and Yosemite*
Thanks for the writeup! How long was the 306 mile day? Were you planning on doing all that in one go, or it just happened? I rode all of the airline highway (CA-25) before. It's a sweet little road. Was eyeing a detour to the New Idria ghost town when passing through Paicines, but it looked like a b...

To share paywalled links you can use an archiver. For instance: https://archive.is. Stick the paywalled URL there, and it'll give you a non-paywalled link back

Did y2k teach us nothing? For far too long I was thinking this was an old article from 1923 about some hardy old-timy hiker. It was confusing, and I was disappointed to learn that this is actually about 2023. I liked my imagined version better

Yeah. Your photos also has a dark-colored vein in the rock that's missing in my photo. Looking at my photo, maybe it was more than 10ft tall. I've only been there once, walking up from Oakwilde, leaving the Gabrielino to go into the Royal Gorge, and rejoining the trail below Switzers. Royal falls is...

Re: Switzer Falls
Royal falls is in the middle of Royal Gorge, below Switzers. It's a short (<10ft) drop into a big pool. The walls on both sides are steep and rocky, so getting around is tricky. If you were looking at a fall from below, and it was easy to get around from above, then you weren't at Royal falls. From ...

Re: 20230204 Full Moon Baldy Bikeaneering
I wasn't cool-enough to ride from the bottom today, but this was still a lot of fun. On the way up I had concerns about headlamp battery life and warmth, but both turned out to be non-issues. Other than the expected wind near the summit, it was a great night to be out. Hiking in the mountains with T...

Re: Cerro Chirripó
We weren't moving super fast, so I felt pretty fine. Sondra maybe had a bit of the AMS, but nothing major. We slept and spent the day at 9000ft the day before the day before the hike, which maybe helped. The "cloud forest" is what they call the high forested areas! I didn't invent it. Ther...

Yessir. They're the most expensive boots you can get at big5. By something like a factor of 2. Still half the price of a middle-of-the-road REI pair, and about as good.

There are trails to the lakes, but we didn't take them. Most people are here to summit stuff, so I'd guess the lakes don't have a lot of visitors. Pretty, though!

There were lots of different birds. I didn't take photos of most of them, or remember their names. It's definitely a good place to go if you're into that.

Re: Corcovado National Park
Regretfully, I did not. This was before the check-in at the park, and wandering off even a little bit to check out the poop may have been frowned-upon.
