As others have stated, the climbing is not that hard, but it's exposed. I did it once before the fire in the middle of the night. I was there maybe 2 years ago. The trail splits off to the right immediately before the Paul Little picnic area. The fork is right behind the ruined bathroom. There was a "trail closed" sign there, but the trail was passable all the way around the dam, until it rejoins the river. I ran out...

I just did the Silver-Pine firebreak. Fairly straightforward as one would expect, with lots of up/down and lots of knee-high grass on the route. Pants highly recommended. Agreed. You were west of the trail. I added the openstreetmap trail myself after a hike 2 years ago, and that's what it says. The trail definitely existed at that point.
