Re: View from San Gabriel peak

I recall hearing that the views are best in winter than rest of the year because the angle of the sun and that it's not reflecting off the ocean by the time of day one reaches SG peak. Yeah, the angle of the sun is definitely significant. The first photo I linked is from Muir peak, and the 2nd is f...

View from San Gabriel peak

This isn't so much a trip report, as an excuse to post some photos. Today I went up to San Gabriel Peak and Mt Lowe via Muir Peak and the Lone Tree trail (thanks, Sean!). The trip itself wasn't particularly noteworthy; trails are all decent. What WAS noteworthy was the visibility. I have NEVER seen ...

Re: 2015 in the San Gabes

Great question! I will finally make it to Stanley-Miller mine, and to some of the ones on the East side of Iron. I will traverse San Antonio ridge. And I will walk the whole length of the Arroyo Seco in the mountains. Should be a great time.

Re: Smith Mountain south ridge and Bear Creek

How was the poison oak? I'm not sensitive so I don't know what it looks like with complete certainty. There was nothing with red leaves, and there wasn't much bush-sized stuff with green leaves that I think could be poison oak. There was lots of larger, tree-sized stuff, and smaller stuff. So yeah;...

Smith Mountain south ridge and Bear Creek

For a while now I've wanted to check out the Bear Canyon trail in the San Gabriel Wilderness. The location of this trail really makes it necessary to do this as a long out/back or to do a car shuttle or walk back on the road. Well last week while looking at the aerial imagery, I discovered another o...

Waterfalls and forks

I read John Robinson's "Mines of the East Fork" recently. In it he mentions off-hand a waterfall I've never heard of: Cape Horn Falls. I half-forgot about it until I read the Glen canyon falls TR here a few days ago. Feeling ambitious, I decided to hit both in the same trip. First, Cape Ho...

Re: Mines in Las Flores Canyon

I've been to all but your first photo. Where's that? A hobo lives in what yopu call "Christmas Man Cave". I talked to him, and he referred to all of the mines as caves. Anyway. I only went as far as what you call "McNally Mine". Is there more stuff past it? Thanks for the info!

Mines in Las Flores Canyon

Hi all. I went up Las Flores canyon for a bit looking for the mythical mines that are there. Found several half-filled openings, one shaft with a hobo living in it, and one good, open shaft. It was possible to enter and walk around the latter one, although there was quite a bit of water in there. Hu...

That is really funny. It IS "Eaton Canyon", just not the right one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caniapiscau_River

And this is the fabled second waterfall: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1335_ ... (pano).jpg

Looks nice. :)

Re: Millard Campground (Pasadena)

Supposedly someone encountered a bear on Echo Mountain too. I did a few months ago. He was sitting at one of the picnic tables eating some hapless hikers' lunch. Their car keys were in the backpack he was rummaging through, so they didn't want to scare him off, afraid he'd take the backpack (and th...

I've no idea how accurate this site is, but it has reports and forecasts for most mountain areas, and at different elevations too. Here's the report for Baldy:

Re: Injured my knee....anyone else?

It can take a very long time. I had a seemingly-light hyperextension injury 1.5 years ago that is still unresolved. I can now do big-ish hikes, but it then takes about a week for the resulting swelling and pain to go away. Go see a doctor if you can. I know a decent knee guy in Pasadena. PM me for t...

Re: Nasty plant with spikey balls

They should all be destroyed: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribulus_terrestris I don't think that's it, actually. Tribulus terrestris (known as "goatheads" where I grew up, enemy of all bicyclists) stays low on the ground and grows out, horizontally. The spiky things are the dried fruit, ...

Re: Nasty plant with spikey balls

I don't know what it is, but that plant is REALLY unfriendly. It has lots of little spikes that detach from the plant and stay lodged in your skin. Then if you don't pull out each spike carefully, they break and then you can't get it out anymore. It also doesn't help that the very steep firebreak le...

Bear cubs a big bonus, but I would have been nervous to see cubs and no mother. Never mind, I'd probably be nervous either way. I was really nervous. My camera has a fixed 35mm lens (which is fairly wide), so I had to get close to even get the shots I did. I hung around for a bit to make sure no ad...

My trips usually aren't eventful enough to warrant a TR, but this one was good, so here goes! I'm getting back into shape after being injured for a while, and climbing Iron seems like a good test of one's fitness. This being a fitness hike, I took the "easy" route both ways: Heaton Flats t...

As others have stated, the climbing is not that hard, but it's exposed. I did it once before the fire in the middle of the night. Didn't know what we were getting into, and on the way up, it didn't seem dangerous or foolhardy at all. The sun came up while we were on the peak, and the downclimb was W...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

I was there maybe 2 years ago. The trail splits off to the right immediately before the Paul Little picnic area. The fork is right behind the ruined bathroom. There was a "trail closed" sign there, but the trail was passable all the way around the dam, until it rejoins the river. I ran out...

I just did the Silver-Pine firebreak. Fairly straightforward as one would expect, with lots of up/down and lots of knee-high grass on the route. Pants highly recommended. The register at Pine Mt goes back to 2007 with at most 5 entries/year. Apparently Sean has been there twice, so his are a notable...

Agreed. You were west of the trail. I added the openstreetmap trail myself after a hike 2 years ago, and that's what it says. The trail definitely existed at that point.
