Re: Allison Mine Loop (or failed attempt on SW ridge Iron Mount)

The talus slope is the correct route leading to a class 3 slope. Not too much brush until you hit the ridge.

Re: Sawtooth Peak/Mineral King Backpack - 9/20-9/22

Got caught in the same system. Clouds settled on me on Mt Eisen and light grapple by the time I made it down to the Big Arroyo. Woke up to snow which killed our chance to climb Squaretop on Sunday. No problem exiting on Monday and no snow at all in Mineral King by 3PM. Pictures. #11 shows Sawtooth w...

Re: Iron Bliss 1X12

I hope you're right. I did walk around the summit area but didn't look to see if someone had thrown it in a bush or down a gully. I guess it (or a replacement) will be up there next time I go up.

Re: Iron Bliss 1X12

Looks like someone walked off with the register box between your visit and mine on this past Sunday. I didn't do a thorough search but did walk around the summit area. Signs of the old PVC pipe (broken) inside the cairn.

I really like that area. Highly recommend rapping down the canyon as an alternative. Maybe time for you to do the traverse soon.

Re: Smith Mtn via Mt Islip

Agree Jim, it's a real neat area. On the other hand, there would be a heck of a lot more people on the trails. Merry X-mas to you too, Augie. Coco is starting to show her age -- she only got to the top of Iron a couple of minutes before me this last time. As for the Sierra Challenge, I have to get i...

Re: Smith Mtn via Mt Islip

Not too tough of a hike compared to the previous week with Bob Burd. :) The Wawona name came off the Tom Harrison map that I have. However, San Gabriel Mountains Trailbuilders calls the trail we were on the Islip Ridge Trail and the trail from Crystal Lake that accesses the ridge as the Wawona cutov...

Smith Mtn via Mt Islip

Woke up Sunday expecting to hike in bad weather but found the sky clear. Decided to climb Smith Mtn from Islip Saddle instead of the lower closed gate at SR39 (at the West Fork junction). Bob L. and Coco the Dog joined me on this trip. After climbing Mt Islip via the NW Ridge, we descended the aband...

Re: Search for hikers near Heaton Flats

It's about 200' down from the plateau (I think it's the photo that Travis has on his web page of me hiking up the corniced ridge). We climbed partially back up and then crossed the very steep south face of Iron to get to the correct ridge. That was my first time on Iron and I didn't know what to exp...

Re: Search for hikers near Heaton Flats

We didn't experience any real steep portions on the ridge itself -- I'm sure they exist like they do on the regular portion (possibly lower). The toughest part of the route was attaining the ridge from above Allison Mine and even that wasn't that bad. For us, the worst part of the trip was probably ...

Re: Search for hikers near Heaton Flats

There is indeed a use trail going down the SW ridge of Iron for a while - I inadvertently led my group down the ridge on my first trip to Iron (which was via the Baldy to Iron traverse). I only realized we were on the wrong trail when I hit the first short section of Class 3 -- something I knew I sh...

is still there. I went up the week before via the ridge. Lots of ticks in the brush. Dead hawk was there a week earlier as well (descended via the road).

Iron Mtn as of 30 Dec

Conditions were perfect today for a normal hike of Big Iron. Dumped my snow gear at the heli-pad as the ridge was clear. I had hoped that in lieu of snow, the steep use trail up from Allison saddle would be packed from recent mosture but no luck. Trail is as loose as ever. Still the toughest single ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

Unfortunately, I have no more information than anyone else. First thought about doing it after Augie Medina mentioned it on one of our hikes (Bob Burd was with us and thought it was a crazy idea). I figured out that Augie is a true masochist after he climbed Iron #1 via it's north ridge. Figured out...
