Re: Allison Mine Loop (or failed attempt on SW ridge Iron Mount)

I kept thinking we were missing it that's why we did the big traverse back and forth but there just wasn't anything there that's remotely continuous any more, aside from the brush. We chose to descend further to the west since the slope eased from more vertical drops above the gorge back to the east...

Allison Mine Loop (or failed attempt on SW ridge Iron Mount)

My friend Tom and I, thinking we were bigger men than we apparently are, decided to have a go at the SW ridge of Iron Mountain via the Heaton Flats trail to Allison Mine on Sunday 3/30/14. I had planned to essentially follow this route. The night before I load several waypoints from @Hikin_Jim into ...

Re: Allison Mine Trail

I'd like to try this variation on Iron before things warm up much more. Does anyone know what conditions are of the trails from Allison\Heaton Saddle to Allison Mine and from there up the SW ridge to the peak? Just trying to figure out if this will be full x-country or if they're still being maintai...

Re: ANF looking for comments on fee system

I really don't mind paying for the Adventure pass, in fact I already have my '14 for both cars. but.... Has anyone read through the pdfs? I'm a little confused the Baldy area talks about establishing "Special Recreation Permit fees" for "winter recreation" on Baldy, but doesn't c...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

I went up Mt. Baldy today from Bear Canyon with my friend Tom. Tom was in fine form but I managed to forget to eat before heading out and paid for it all the way up. The wind was out in places, mostly anywhere exposed on the South-East. I didn't mind it much and found it energizing. Tom who wore sho...

Re: Footwear Experiment in Icehouse Canyon

:? Interesting. I completely fail to understand. I like my toes. At least my big toes they're useful, my pinky toes I could do without (I have a nasty habit of breaking them while chasing my cat around the house, then they f-up my hiking). Even so I'd not intentionally try for frostbite. I'm just wo...

Re: GPS -- Advice and Recommendations?

This may be after the fact but I've started carrying and recommend the etrex 20. I use if for recording my trips to share and as a backup in low visibility since it seems get great signal regardless. The unit itself has great battery life, clear color display and seems to pickup signal quickly. It t...

Re: Deal-of-the-day Gear Sites

Just a note on geartrade.com this is another part of the Backcountry organization. Look for the Backcountry user on the site. It is actually backcountry.com and associated websites, items ship out right away and normally get to me within 2 days. Like REI used gear sale but: less of a mad house, you ...

Thanks Augie, that's great to hear. And nice to meet you virtually at least. I feel like I've been following you around for a long time now (hopefully that's not creepy) :? with your prolific contributions on SummitPost and other SoCal resources.

Re: Useful Links for Mapping and GPS

Wow, thanks for posting all of these! I've been posting some of my GPS tracks to connect.garmin.com. More for personal tracking and fitness, but if you have a link to the "activity", posted trips are available for download in multiple formats. No user is required for download. Tracks can b...

Re: Vivian to Jepson in a snowstorm

That sucks. I was there 12-8-13 headed to Galena. There was a younger guy (20s-30s maybe, I'm a horrible judge of age) in the booth at the Big Falls parking lot. He seemed new and was curious about the jump off. No permit is required for it so if it was the same guy maybe that was the difference. It...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

I think a friend and I are going to try to hit Baldy from the Village this Sunday 12-15-13. If anyone is interested let me know. I'll be bringing an ice axe, crampons, and sense of adventure. I'm not too sure what conditions will be but expect cold and windy with some slick sections. I'm not very fa...

Re: Annual Winter Mountaineering Clinic

I'm up to get in some training! I'll be in Mexico 1/10-1/20 to climb Itza, Orizaba, and bum around some, but any weekend outside of that I should be good to go. If there's interest I can bring my crevasse rescue kit and\or avy gear and we can practice if we find a suitable area.

Galena Peak \ Mill Creek JumpOff

It's out of the area this forum is focused on but a good winter snow climb just the same. I was out near Vivian Creek TH in San Bernardino NF for a meetup climb of Galena Peak 12/8/13. I only went up through the head wall since I had time constraints and the climb started even later than it was sche...

Re: Iron Mountain Conditions after a snow storm

I was actually up there on the classic rt 11/24/13. The storm warning was pretty out of proportion. Baldy was coated up high but Iron Mountain was just dusted (maybe 1" of powder accumulation) just on the peak. Around 12:30, when I got up there, it was just starting to dust a little more but no...
