Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)
The gate at the 39 junction was open last week. I'm assuming you're parking in that spot anyway and taking the PCT to Little Jimmy. The parking area was open with restrooms and plenty of parking on a Sunday Afternoon. The campground was 3/4 full- surprising to me on a Sunday Night this early in the ...

Re: Rincon Red Box rd vs Gabrielino
I've been on this road several times and just again last year. I've never seen much change in the road condition over the years, so I assume it's the same. The condition has always been excellent for hiking, if not a little boring. Valley Forge up toward RED BOX is completely exposed and not much to...

Roofing Nails on HWY 39 - Road Sabotage or just unlucky?
A prior forum post alerted me to a caution that it appeared SOMEONE has been throwing roofing nails (or nails with fixed washers so they land pointy-side up) on HWY 2 and HWY 39 in retaliation for ???? (motorcycles, anti-forestry, whatever?) I believe I have fallen victim as last night (Sunday 8/24)...

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
I just mountain biked Red Box to West Fork on the Dirt Rincon Road on Sunday the 12th and it was clear with just a slimey trickle of water over the cement slab near valley forge. There was a small road grader parked off to the side a mile or so in, so there might be some maintenance going on. I also...

Redwoods in San Gabriel Mountains
Are there Redwoods in the San Gabriels? I've used several tree identifiers and google searches, but they all claim Redwoods only exist in Central and Northern California. I'm fairly good at identifying the many Pines and Cedars- it's not any of them. So, what are those thick-barked, giant, red trunk...

Re: Crystal Lake to Islip weather?
Was there last weekend, Temps should be comparable. Daytimes a very comfortable 60's with no wind. I walked around in a T-shirt, but needed my jacket on the bicycle. Night time and shade a bit chillier 45. At 7'000+ it was quite a bit chillier and in the 40's(felt 50's)- but perfect for jacket as lo...

Re: Windy Gap Trail (Crystal Lake)
Thanks, Pearl for your post-hike report! Always good to hear first-hand knowledge on those trail/weather conditions.
Sorry the weather didn't work out for you- though it's always extraordinary on a weather day to have the mountain all to yourself!

Re: Windy Gap Trail (Crystal Lake)
I'm betting Taco is dead on here. Weather did come in, but too warm and that's a South Facing trail. Highly Likely it is clear this weekend with only sparse wet patches in the shade near the last few hundred feet (elevation) of the Gap. I was on North Facing slopes Friday 29th same altitude a few mi...

According to NFS, Off-Season Camping Allowed in Campgrounds.
I have heard mixed information over the years and have even been asked to leave by rangers themselves. So I called the NFS this morning and was told that it is permissible to camp in Angeles Forest Campgrounds off season under most circumstances. Campgrounds that are closed can be used as trail camp...

Re: Best Places to camp in the San Gabs?
Sometimes I forget which is Chilao and which is Charlton flats? (there's two with "CH" right next to each other. But I believe Chilao has been closed all year this year. HOWEVER- I did park outside the gate with my adventure pass and hike into the campground to camp there twice this year. ...
