Started up the ski hut trail late Tuesday morning. I saw about 10 Really nice people on the way up to the summit where I had a really clear view of all of southern california. It was ~50-60 degrees on the way up with just a little breeze on top. somebody had left a few cans of tecate, if it was anyo...
Silverado motorway goes up the hill and meets the main divide road near bedford peak. maple springs road is the partially paved road in the canyon bottom.
I'm really glad I finally got around to doing the Vivian creek trail this past spring before the gate/access drama, this Alex guy sounds like the type of person I go to the forest to get away from.
Must have been a great hike, I haven't had a chance to get out and do a snow trek. I'm very jealous.
Interesting route up Modjeska, I will have to try that sometime. I had looked at that firebreak from the Bedford peak trail, and wondered if it was passable.
Local Naturalist group's pictures of Harding canyon here http://www.flickr.com/photos/naturalist ... 960376450/. The canyon is at its best after a few good days of rain, and can be dry in the summer if its a dry year.
http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/clevelan ... 4&actid=50 FS website says there is no east side trail head, but google earth shows a trail going all the way from the main divide down to the temescal valley. Couple of bikers rode the trail with go-pros, doesn't show if they exited at the bottom or ...
The Santa Ana's Have way too much brush for any real XC routes, but there are a few canyons with waterfalls that have use trails and some fun bouldering and rock hopping. all three of these are best done in spring following a few days of rain, if you attempt in fall or late summer the creeks will mo...
Walked up the Main divide Road From the small parking area near the long canyon road gate up to the Los Pinos peak trail. Its about 5miles and 1000ft the trail is mostly on the ridge line and has great views of Santiago the tallest peak in the Santa Ana's of all of southern California, especially on...
Backpacking in the Santa Ana's is pretty limited dispersed camping is only allowed in the san mateo wilderness. Either you hike to bluejay campground which is a drive in campsite off the main divide road with 55 sites, fire pits, bathrooms(gross), and water, Or your other option is the San Mateo can...
The Trabuco canyon road is pretty rough especially once you pass the National forest boundary. I have seen plenty of smaller cars make it all he way to the trail heads, you should just have to be cautious to avoid the big bumps and potholes and you'd be fine. Rain could make the road impassible for ...
When the trail splits I went right up the Trabuco canyon trail instead of right up the switchbacks on the west horse thief trail. the Trabuco canyon trail has all the big trees and shade, Horsethief has unshaded chaparral switchbacks on the way up to the main divide.
Took a cloudy/rainy hike up the Trabuco canyon trail to the Main Divide Truck Trail, this is part of a few very popular Mountain biking loops so the rain kept them away and left me the trail to myself. The Trailhead Is past the popular Holy Jim's parking area another 1/4 mile down the Rough Trabuco ...
I got the idea of descending into the canyon via the san juan trail from this album, http://www.flickr.com/photos/naturalist ... 423660953/ . The pictured parts of the canyon seen fairly clear, but you never know when you will reach a impassible wall of poison oak. los pinos ridge recon of your sugg...
hot spring canyon is one of the great hidden gems of the area, I hope we get more rain this year a lot of the local falls were pretty lackluster this year. I would hate to make the long trek from below and have the falls be dry. the los pinos ridge- tanrvendi sounds like a hell of a bushwhack but I'...
You also might want to grab a franko's map of the Santa Ana Mountains/chino hills state park, it's geared more toward mountain biking but it has all of the popular trails of the area. I think REI usually has some available. I usually have my bear bell on my pack when on some of the singletrack trail...
