Re: Beyond Twin Peaks (Triplet Rocks Attempt)

I thought my hike to East Twin last Sunday was tough enough. The thought of going on beyond was daunting. Saw your notes in the register. Thanks for putting back the sign to the saddle. It didn't look like a dead end to me. There are lots of green plants and a damp patch where you got water, but not...

Re: The Next To Last Knob -No Trail For A Fat Old Man

My friend, you are assuming that I have way more patience than I possess. And my inability to follow directions has been pointed out to me more times than I care to mention. Suffice to say that it was a good hike, albeit a failed attempt, and the views were great even if the trail was not particular...

Re: The Next To Last Knob -No Trail For A Fat Old Man

Sorry dudes. I've had enough. One day I'll figure out how to post pictures here, but not today.

I really am not usually this incompetent, but this is confounding me.

It was a great hike, notwithstanding the fact that I didn't summit. Next time.

Thank you RichardK. I'll try that. I tried to attach files directly and that didn't work well.[/b]

Re: The Next To Last Knob -No Trail For A Fat Old Man

I tried to upload a bunch of pictures through a couple of devices, but apparently it is beyond my capabilities. Two took. How and why I don't know. The rest I kept getting error messages until I lost patience with it. Maybe I need a tutorial on uploading pictures here. https://eispiraten.com/images-...

Re: Possible Lost Hikers - San Gorgonio

It's not likely that they would have finished in 10 hours even if one of them weren't injured. 7 or 8 is a late start to summit that mountain and get down by 5 or 6.

Glad that they were found and are safe.

I tried to post a couple of pictures, but for some reason was not successful. I'll try later with another device. It was really picturesque up there and well worth the trip.

The Next To Last Knob -No Trail For A Fat Old Man

Rattlesnake Peak. I knew it was a bad idea when I thunk it. But if it wasn't for bad ideas I'd hardly have any at all. I'm going to let you know up front, I did not summit. I got to the next to last knob and eyeballed the rocky knife edge saddle to the next steep slope and said "NFW!" You ...

OK. I tried it. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for leading me to believe that this would be an easy walk in the park.

Trip report to follow.

Re: Tell Me About Rattlesnake Peak

Thanks. I appreciate it. I read about the trail before the tunnels, and I think I saw a trail past the tunnels from the Bridge to Nowhere trail. No way would I want to try from there. I ain't the brightest bulb in the Christmas tree, but I ain't that dim. I figured the route would be exposed, but wa...

Re: Tell Me About Rattlesnake Peak

Recently burned? The fires I recall recently were the Colby Fire and a couple off the 39. Is it bare?
The route I thought I saw from the Bridge to Nowhere trail looked sparse, but not bare.
How recently were you there? Which route did you take?
Do you have a better peak to suggest?

Tell Me About Rattlesnake Peak

I have been intrigued with the idea of hiking to Rattlesnake Peak, but I don't know anyone who has been and can't find anyone who is interested enough to go with me. I've eyeballed what I think is part of a trail up there the last couple of times I've been to the Bridge to Nowhere, but I'd like some...

I like Smith a lot, but I usually hike it when it's cool. There isn't any shade and that's bad for my delicate complexion.

Re: Middle Fork Lytle Creek -- Mini Trip

I faxed in my request to the ranger station and they faxed it back to me. Kind of a pain, since I had it faxed to work, but apparently they don't do email. That looks like a lot more water than was there the two times I went up this summer. There was some water at Third Stream Crossing, but it was b...

Re: Mine Gulch/Vincent Gulch/East Fork SG River

I've looked at this trail from above and wondered about it and this Saturday decided to satisfy my curiousity and I'm glad I did. The beginning of the trail from the road to the mine was overgrown and we were concerned about how the trail would be further down, but it opened up and was really nice. ...

Re: Middle Fork Trail (Lytle Creek)

I did this trail with some friends from Middle Fork to the saddle 7/12. I liked the trail better than the Ice House Canyon trail. It is longer, steeper and more exposed, but it was easier on my feet. I only saw 4 other people, two campers at Third Stream Crossing and an ill prepared couple down belo...

If you can hike Cucamonga (11.8 miles RT, 4300 feet vertical gain), then you are not that old, that fat or that slow. Thanks for the report and good luck! Trust me, I am exactly as described, but I am out there every Saturday and Sunday punishing myself for my past sins. Mt. Baldy for the second ti...

Re: Bear Creek Trail (Smith Mountain)

I did this from the saddle down to the creek in January. There were a couple of sections where the trail had slid down the hillside and we were walking on top of the slide and clinging to rotten rock and tree roots. There was a toolbox before the first slide and I had seen a couple of volunteers out...

Cucamonga Peak

If y'all will indulge me, I'd like to submit my first post on this forum. Yesterday I joined some friends for a hike to Cucamonga Peak. We got a late start, as usual when hiking with a group, and set off at 8:20. I've only been hiking for a year and been working my way up from little strolls to dece...

Re: Question about Mtn Bikers on SG trails

I run into them a lot on Lower Monroe, but I feel like that is really their trail and I'm the one intruding on their space. Almost all are conscientious and courteous. I just step to the side and let them go by. The ones on the trails around Mt. Wilson and Altadena seem like they have chosen a tough...

I decided to test the limits of footwear technology on Monday by ascending Icehouse Canyon in hiking sandals and no socks
The thought would never have crossed my mind. Now I have a sense of morbid curiosity about it. My toes are already black and hammered, what's a little frostbite?

I didn't think it was advisable to go up there last Sunday, but I was up there yesterday and again today and it was great. Not much snow. And not cold until I got to the top and the aptly named Windy Gap.
