Re: Finally, Olancha Peak

Hey Mattcav, The trail is pretty easy until the last thousand foot up to the summit, which is all bouldering, can't see any way to avoid that section so its a good idea to save some gatorade for the final push.

Finally, Olancha Peak

Finally, I was able to tag Olancha Peak, which had been on my to do list for years, there was always a reason that stopped me, but, on 09/08/12 with a free Saturday Max and I drove up to Sage Flat Trailhead to start out at 5am. The first couple of miles were slow going because the trail is sandy wit...

Hopefully that will burn out at the top of the ridge, if it has'nt already, most people who reach the San Antonio Ridge are serious hikers, I can't imagine it being man made, but you never know.

Maya age 12 summits Mt Whitney

08/21/2012 was one of my proudest hiking moments when my granddaughter Maya accompanied by my son-in-law Giles summited Mount Whitney. She had been training continuously all year for this event and her determination was inspiring. We started out at 2am and made the summit at 11am, we din’nt stay lon...

Good job Kristo,

It sounds like you had to keep one eye on the weather but you still made good time. Looking at the weather reports it seems that showers and T/storms will be around for a while. I like the 2am start to beat those afternoon storms.

I am so sorry to hear this news, I last hiked with Bill in 2007 on a group hike to Thor Peak. Afterwards we all met in Lone Pine for pizza before heading home and although I occasionally read some of his posts I never saw him again after that. He was a good person and a strong hiker, my sincere cond...

Re: Forsee Trail and 4 peaks 7/22

Thought I would post some pics of Forsee Creek Trail. Went up on Saturday (07/28/12) to tag ESB, SB and Anderson Peaks. It was my first time on this trail which is very easy going and as previously stated has some long ass switchbacks, the weather was beautiful, clear blue skies with a slight breeze...

Re: Mount Whitney Dayhike - 7/24/2012

Personally I find C2C a little harder than the Whitney day hike, this may be because of the extra preparation that I give to Sierra hikes which makes things go more smoothly. While they both require early starts 2am to 5am for most people, they are of course different animals, C2C has larger elevati...

I've just had the same permit experience as David, applied for a San G permit by fax a week ago but the allocation is full up so its on to my second choice Forsee Creek Trail. I suppose a lot of people are in training for their High Sierra trips, does anyone know how early you have to apply for a Sa...

Yup, looks like Google Earth proves the point, thats a pretty neat picture. My Whitney date for this year is 21st Aug, but this year has special meaning as my thirteen year old hiking/ rock climbing grand daughter is coming over from Europe to hit the trail with me. Guess I will make this a 2am star...

Re: Twin Peaks and Bear Cub

Hey David, Sounds like you made good time and had a bear sighting to boot, pretty awesome. Did you start off from Buckhorn camp ground because Buckhorn Spring ( if it still exists) is up the drainage near there, you would then ascend to the saddle below the un-named point at 7190ft, and then travers...

Re: Dawson Saddle to Copter Ridge(19 May) & Ross Mtn 26 May)

Hey Hikeup, Yes, i hiked Ross on Saturday (05/26/2012), it was cold starting off with a lot of ice on the trees. The clouds began to close in as soon as I began the ridge decent from Baden-Powell, which was a pity because it obscured some great views of Iron Mountain and the San Antoniio ridge. The ...

I was surprised to see so much ice on some of the trees. Friday night must have been pretty cold for you camping ...

Thanks Jfr,

Yes some registers can be quite interesting, in a way they are part of the mountain folklore. I recall that on Morris Peak the register went back to 1963, thats almost 50 years of hiking history.

Dawson Saddle to Copter Ridge(19 May) & Ross Mtn 26 May)

I think it was 2005 since I was last on Copter Ridge, I remember how beautiful it was, so I was disappointed to see the first half mile of the Ridge hike down from Mt Hawkins had been burned out by recent fires. However, not to be put off I headed down the ridge and found the lower sections as beaut...

I was last up at Monrovia/Rankin Peaks in 2007, I went up the fire road from Monrovia Park, I seem to remember something about the area being closed on certain days because of the local Police Department using the firing range, do not know if thats still the case today.

Great TR Turtle, you really captured the atmosphere of high desert hiking in those photos, what kind of a time delay do you have on your camera to capture some of those self portrait shots, they came off real good, or did you use a remote. I totally get the solo hiking thing as many of my longer tri...

Upon arriving on Baldy's summit today (12/11/10 about 9.30am) I was greeted by Sal and Guilermo who were proudly holding up a sign, proclaiming "International Mountain Day. I was so pleased to be informed of this that I took a picture of them and of course the sign, I even got in on the act by ...

Nice job James and a great trip report.

I did'nt know there was an easy way through the dreaded buckthorn section except "just grin and bear it".
