Re: August Hikes: Crack of Doom, Stoddard, and Smith

The rock in the Crack of Doom looks rotten. That traverse must have been knarly.

The tarantula needs a haircut.

Re: Mill Creek to Galena Peak

Nice report, Sean. You are definitely more daring, but I made a poor choice ascending the headwall. I thought staying left was better, contrary to the HPS guide. After the "dirt glissade" down, I was pleasantly surprised to discover my pants survived to hike another day.

Silverado Fire

The Silverado fire in Orange County has burned at least 1,600 acres and prompted mandatory evacuations. Smoke can be seen a long ways away. I hope it stays away from the houses and cabins. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-m ... story.html Trailheads blocked by the fire include Black Star Canyon...

Like Rico, I've never been to Etiwanda, but on the list. The summit looks cool.

Nice report and that topo has impressive detail. Maybe you should shoot a copy of the topo map to the USFS for future maintenance.

Does anyone know what this evil plant is? Abundant on the north side of Silver Mountain.

One of the best panoramas I've seen. Views sure are great from Big Iron. Bear cubs a big bonus, but I would have been nervous to see cubs and no mother. Never mind, I'd probably be nervous either way. I'm thinking it might be an interesting time to do the alternate route up Fried Rattlesnake. I thin...

Rico, It was a fair amount of gain. Comparable to Baldy from Manker Flat, but somewhat harder because of the long stretch of boulder scrambling in the middle. Temps were in the low 40s on top but the wind was 15-20 mph above 7500'. I wanted face protection up top for the blowing ash as much as the c...

How far in advance did you have to get your permit? I tried to do this a few years ago and all the permits were gone. They suggested I pay $190 to have a guide take me up…not happening. Permits for summer went on sale in February and that's when I bought mine: http://mshinstitute.org/index.php/clim...

Yes, there is a lot of poodle dog on the ridge. So bad in some places that contact is unavoidable. I recommend long pants and long shirt at least for that section.

One of the big problems with Eaton Canyon is that it is so close to the city, easy to drive up to it, and easy to get to the Razorback. There aren't dozens of rescues in any other single location in the forest AFAIK. Hard places to get like San Antonio Ridge don't attract the inexperienced thrill se...

I think we were aware of the storm, but the wind was blowing against it and it never really moved closer to us. Strange that in the middle of a drought, it was raining in the desert.
