Deadwood Peak

Deadwood (9,846') is in Eldorado National Forest, about an hour south of Tahoe. A trail from Upper Blue Lake meandered close to the mountain, but the final ascent to the peak was pathless. As if to foreshadow the challenges that lay ahead, we found the way to Upper Blue Lake barred, and were compell...

I've only been to Lake Tahoe once.
Well, I've only been twice and the first time didn't count because the lake was hidden by smoke from wildfires. So I think we're even ;)

Re: West Fork (Red Box to Shortcut and back)

Great effort. I'm having a hard time reconciling that Colin is not coming back after hiking with him a few weeks ago. I know SAR is doing everything that can be done, but I still have this feeling of helplessness. We face risks every time we venture out, but this is a harsh reminder of the stakes.

Re: North Tahoe Relay

Thanks for the report. That place is gorgeous. What kind of spray were you using for the mosquitoes? I didn't have any. I looked for it at two places around Incline Village including a 7-eleven, but could not find any. I knew from other reports they were going to be a problem, but they were worse t...

North Tahoe Relay

I completed a tour of five peaks around the north rim of Tahoe. This was the itinerary: Incline Peak, NV (9561') Relay Peak, NV (10336') Mount Houghton, NV (10490') Rose Knob Peak, NV (9710') Rose Knob, NV (9600') My start on Incline Road led me down a gentle slope to a junction with a solitary path...

Thanks for organizing this, Sean. These historical explorations have been fun. Brush was not as bad as Black Jack. Also my second time to Deception and I also forgot how steep the initial climb was.

Despite leaving with thorns in both my hands, this was one of my favorite hikes of the year. Great fun exploring a new area and it was nice to finally meet Jeff and Nate from the forum, and Guy and Scoops. The brush was a little worse than the satellite photos suggested, but the team was well armed....

Nice mountains. Never been to that part of Utah, but the parts I've seen were loaded with beauty. Cool that you can hike with your dad.

Are you a geologist by trade? I like the details about the rock. I took a basic geology course in college, but have forgotten most of it.

What a neat trip. Surprised to hear there were so many people camping in the snow. At least they didn't bother you. The trash is shocking. Ice House is so crowded now. I used to find spots in the parking lot late morning on weekends. I guess that was a long time ago. @Uncle Rico - I also switched la...

That looks wild and I think you may have found some real quicksand! I always expected it to be more common because of cartoons, but I don't think I've ever found any, which is totally fine.

Thanks for the report and photos.

I was hoping it was more like falling rock canyon where that talus field has larger rocks and is a little more stable. Oh well, the fun was in the exploration.

Modjeska's East Face

Santiago Peak is the highest and Modjeska Peak the lowest of two peaks that together are usually called Saddleback in the Santa Anas. You can drive to the top of each of them and there are several trail options. I've climbed both several times from many routes. Satellite views showed a giant talus f...

You both must have big loppers to pull that off. Looks like quite serious brush. That was nice the way you tied it in with the old photo.

Look fun! How did you decide to come here? I got the idea from one of Bob Burd's trip reports. Whenever I find one that looks interesting, I tuck it away in a list of possible future hikes. Then dust one off when I am looking for something in particular, like a good scramble in this case. It's also...

Anschutz Benchmark via Difficult Canyon

Girl Hiker's post on 49 palms whetted my appetite for some JT scrambling. I read about some big bouldering in a remote corner of the park, far away from public access. Being summit focused, I plotted a route through Difficult Canyon (the actual topo name) to Anschutz with a return down Dragon Wash w...

Re: The Deadly PL&P Trail

Those were sheep bones. They've been up in that same area for years, probably still there. The first time I crossed that was easy, but the second time storms had washed a lot of dirt down on the trail. One part has a 50 degree slope (scary). Yeah, the storms are accelerating the erosion. Thanks for...
