Re: Olancha Peak
Nice pics! I look at that peak whenever I drive past, thinking one of these days I should do it. Of course summer probably isn't the best time due to the amount of water to carry and lack of same along the trail. I was trying to think of the best time, and each season has something to deal with. Ch...

Olancha Peak
It looks like the last trip report on Olancha was ~10 years ago, so here is one from last Thursday. It is the King Kong of the southern Sierra, towering over everything 14 miles north in the range and everything south of it. I drove 4 hours from the OC to the Olancha Pass trailhead and started aroun...

Re: Mountain treasure: WW2-era water canteen
Awesome find. Serious cool factor. :) One of the big debates when I was a kid was between aluminum vs. plastic water bottles/canteens. Plastic was frequently brittle but pretty quickly improved as I got older and eventually won out for the most part -- although lately I'm seeing a lot of people hik...

Re: Mountain treasure: WW2-era water canteen
That's wild.
In the 1940s, was a metal canteen the most efficient way to carry water?
Was it made of aluminum or tin?

Re: EAGLE MOUNTAIN ATTEMPT
Wow, quite a story! I summited Eagle in 2020 solo. I had a good track and took the main gully up. It looks like you guys went more directly at least in part over rougher terrain. There is some route finding to do all the way to final bit of ridge. I remember a few cairns on the little plateau area b...

Re: InReach Mini: how well is it supposed to work?
I am curious how it works out. I've been on the fence about getting one of these, but I really dislike ongoing subscriptions. I think the cheapest sub was $12/month last time I looked. Also, the screen is so small I don't think I could use it for navigation. The larger one has a better screen. I do ...

Estimated Energy to hike Iron Mountain #1
I stumbled on an article at Outside Online about an equation developed by the Army for estimating the energy expended while walking on level ground, uphill, and downhill. The equation takes into account the mass of the walker, the gradient (G), the speed (S), and converts that to an hourly energy ex...

Wow! I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. You are out there pushing the limits of biking like you did with hiking and climbing. The numbers are huge. My butt hurts thinking about doing 200+ miles in one day, not to mention the thousands in gain. I really enjoyed all the photos. Ca...

Several web sites suggest grizzlies are occasionally spotted I didn't realize that there were grizzlies in Colorado. Sorry, bad information from a web site on Elbert. A quick google search says the last grizzly in CO was sighted in 1951. I should have checked on that before including it in the repo...

Re: Mount Elbert, CO
Nice hike! I went there a dozen years ago, took the south trail instead. Much the same, walking through trees until they were gone and then just a lot of slow uphill. My summit was in June so there was a lot more snow all over than what your pictures show. And the best part - prime rib dinner at Qu...

Not really. Some birds I couldn't identify and a couple of pikas. The main trail was busy enough to scare most wildlife away. Several web sites suggest grizzlies are occasionally spotted, but we saw mostly nothing.

Mount Elbert, CO
Mt. Elbert is the highest mountain in Colorado at 14433' and second highest in the continental US. Since last year, my college roommate Jeff and I had been talking about climbing a big mountain together. Last month, he suggested Elbert and mentioned that his wife also wanted to do Elbert. My wife wa...

Thanks for the 'port. I always wondered about those peaks on the other side of Gorgonio. Did you happen to see the aspen grove? Have they recovered from the fire? I hiked through the Aspen Grove 2 years ago when Fish Creek was closed. Almost every Aspen tree was blackened from fire, maybe half of t...

Bighorn Mountain San Bernardino Mountains
I started at Fish Creek Trailhead, a seven mile drive on a good dirt road. I recommend high clearance for ruts and rocks. The trail was in better shape than the last time I was here. The first couple of miles don't gain much until you start the switchbacks up the side of Grinnell (10,284'). At Fish ...

Mount Conness
In the forum, the last post on Conness was by Ze in 2013. I guess it can use a refresh. Mount Conness is 12,595', one of the higher one in northern Yosemite. Conness has rock climbing routes on the wall and a challenging class 4 north ridge. The easiest way up is from Sawmill Campground. There is a ...

Re: White Mountain Peak on bikes
Awesome bike ride! I appreciate all the detail on the road. It's a cool looking mountain and worth doing some day. This is tempting for me since I've had my MTB for over a year now. Still not great, but comfortable on most trails. My general impression is that biking is harder than walking and easie...
