Re: Baldy Bowl and Register Ridge Loop
Didn't you see the one way (up) sign on Register Ridge? That is some unfriendly downhill. The sheep are all over the place this year. Good omen.

Bighorn and snake
There were two bighorns on this cliff, but I was only able to snap the curious one. The sun was in an unfavorable location, but you can still make him out. And what San Gabriel trip would be complete without a rattlesnake this year? https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i1183/albums/x47...

Dude, I love that shot of Whitney. You must have some mega-powerful camera gear. Other photos are great, too. Thanks for sharing.

Re: "Death March" Scouting Trip - June 8
This hike sounds awesome. And Friday the 13th is perfect. I don't think caching water, say at the top of North Backbone or below West Baldy, is cheating or diminishes the hike. Just good planning from my point of view on a mostly waterless path, but people have differing opinions on that sort of thi...

Re: TR: Mt Whitney (second time is the charm)
Congrats on your summit. I take it from your title that the first trip didn't go as well. I saw at least a dozen discarded wag bags from Trail Camp up, many thrown into ravines or over the edge of the trail. I can't imagine what the problem was like before the wag bags were added. One in my group ha...

Nice photos, Rico. Keep it up.
Baldy looks even more massive from the North.
You are always posting great stuff from the back range that I [eventually] plan to do, including this one. I should be able to get back there some time in September.

Rico,
One of our group twisted a knee just below Trail Camp. We crawled of the mountain at 1 mph and got back well after dark and the portal store was closed. I'm trying to forget about the descent.

Mt. Whitney day hike 7/25/2013
We got on the trail at 3:30 AM in complete darkness. There were several stream crossings early, one over logs. All the streams and lakes were high due to heavy rain early in the week. The forecast for hike day was a 30% chance of thunderstorms, and ominous clouds hovered throughout the day. The clou...

Nice trip and photos. Loco!
I am trying to figure out exactly where you came up from satellite, but it looks like there were a couple of choices, all steep. I am guessing north of the last lift. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the detailed trip report. Do you need a permit outside the Whitney Zone for day hikes?
From my map, Lone Pine Peak looks like it is about 1 mile off the Meysan trail, and a stiff climb at 12,944'. Nice.

I've been searching for bighorns for a couple of years, and feel very lucky to have seen them this close. It was a rare moment of connection for me. I wish I had a nicer camera than my phone. Looking forward to my next trip in that area.

Cucamonga, Bighorn, Ontario 7/12/2013
I planned a route starting from Icehouse Canyon to Cucamonga Peak, dropping back down to the saddle between Cucamonga and Bighorn, up the ridge to Bighorn, then back on trail out to Ontario Peak, returning through Kelly Camp and Icehouse Canyon. No summit log found on Cucamonga, and the clouds block...

Trail companion? I've found rattlesnakes don't get the "sharing the trail" concept. They act like they own the place. I hope you spotted him before you heard the rattle.

Great photos! Some of those peaks look super jaggy. Mount Clark trivia from Wikipedia: It is named for Galen Clark, an early explorer and the first guardian of Yosemite National Park. The Clark Range, also named for Galen Clark, is a sub-range of the Sierra Nevada. Before it was given its present na...

San Gorgonio Vivian Creek 6/28/2013
Did the standard Vivian Creek trail to San Gorgonio on Friday, 6/28. It was hot, and the earlier reports of bugs and biting flies were confirmed. Bugs were an issue up to 9500'. We were startled by a rattlesnake just below High Creek, about 5' off the trail. He did not want to share his part of the ...

Sean,
Yeah, I would definitely wait until the water returns in the spring. I thought since the last shuttle trip was June 29, there would still be some flow. The people that go next Saturday will get all of the crowd and none of the falls.

Fish Canyon Falls 6/21/2013
I followed the Van Tassel ridge route to Fish Canyon Falls. I was the only car in the dirt parking lot. The trail leaves from the parking lot, follows a fence behind a horse stable, then switchbacks up the ridge. The first mile gain is about 950' with no shade. The next half mile is a jungle plateau...
