I went in late June and there was some poison oak intruding into the trail, mostly on the other side of the ridge while descending into Fish Canyon. It wasn't completely overgrown, but I suggest long pants.
Here is my trip report from June:

If anyone makes a trip to the San Gabes, please give us an on the ground report.
I suspect all gates will be closed, but places that are not gated like Ice House will be available. Whether the park is officially closed may not matter where there is open access.
State and county parks will be open.

From their web site:
Trekking Pole warranty:
There is a one year warranty on LEKI Carbon Shaft Trekking poles and a lifetime warranty on LEKI Aluminum Shaft Trekking poles.
The warranty covers shaft breakage only.

Leki Khumbu trekking pole failures
Early in the summer, I bought a pair of Leki Khumbu trekking poles to replace the generic ones I had. On the first two hikes I used them, the locking mechanisms (there are two) that are used to adjust the height failed on steep descents. They would just collapse as if unlocked. I am not on the heavy...

Best sunscreen?
I'm not sure this should be in "gear", but it is sort of gear. I've been using Parrot Head sunscreen because it is supposed to be sweat resistant, not allowing the sweat to bring the chemicals into your eyes. But, it hasn't been working well in all conditions. Does anyone have a favorite s...

Hey Ellen!
You had quite a thrill outside the FRC proper. Apparently, the left and right ridges above the canyon are similar terrain with loose dirt and bad rock. Glad you ladies made it out safely, but I see it took a blood sacrifice from both of us.

Great report, mcphersonm80.
The Sierra crest pano from the west is awesome. Your photos belong in National Geographic. Vivid!
Bummer that the snow changed your plans, but few get to witness such a seasonal change in one day. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Sugarloaf ridge attempt
There were a couple places early where we could have gotten back into the canyon. For example, just past the 1st dry waterfall. After that, it is cliffed out in most places and we weren't really looking for ways in, just up. It was just a poor group decision to stay on the ridge. On the way down, we...

That's what I thought, too. He didn't go to the doctor, just put Neosporin on it. It was wide, which made it bleed a lot. It's healing up fine, but will leave a nice scar.

Sugarloaf ridge attempt
On Friday, I climbed Sugarloaf via Falling Rock Canyon and have no beta to add that hasn't been covered in depth. However, two weeks earlier, a couple of my friends came with me and we mistakenly started up the ridge just right of the canyon. We figured it out after a couple of hundred feet, but com...

Neat hike and photos. Thanks for sharing the trip. No question from all the black rocks that you were climbing a volcano. I can't believe there are 8 rest stations along the way and one nearly at the summit. Did you ever feel like you were in the wilderness? I guess you only need to pack in enough t...

Very nice photos.
You canyoneer types!!?! It's never enough to just climb a mountain, you have to rappel down the vertical parts. Even that is not enough, you have to go down waterfalls and land in pools of water.
I think it's great, just not for me.

Rico,
We are lucky to have three major ranges within 90 minutes of LA. All with a slightly different flavor. Too many mountains and not enough time.

Hey Taco,
I think the gully on the south side, the other side of the "head" is steeper, but I didn't go over the summit to get a good look at it.

Dragons Head and Jepson Peak from Vivian Creek
On Wednesday, I went up Vivian Creek to hit Jepson Peak and Dragons Head. I timed leaving my house so I would arrive shortly after the gate at Vivian opened at 6:00 AM. With rain earlier in the week, the trail was damp, but firm. It was a cool 57F at the trailhead and warmed up to 70F. The weather w...

I emailed you my name for the list. Thanks for taking action on this. I've been following the threads on the San Gorgonio forum.
I haven't needed to access it before 6:00 am yet, but I might want to some day and I don't understand the desire to lock it up, especially for people coming back late.

Nice one, Rico! I love seeing other mountain ranges and the different terrain. Some of those valleys look like golf courses. I was in Seattle at the end of July and everything was lush and green, even just off the freeways. Hey, other states have lots of green, but we still have all the best shades ...
