Re: 12/20/13 Cucamonga Peak
Great trip report and photos. So there is snow hiding on some of the northern slopes. Everything on the south slopes, even high elevations looks almost mostly dry. Did you feel the need for spikes or crampons when you got past the Bighorn-Cucamonga saddle? I don't remember any mention in your report...

Re: Eastern High Country from Afar
You must have been in the very northern part of the Santa Anas.
I also try to identify peaks I see on the horizon, then I try to figure out how I would attempt to climb them
It can be very distracting while driving.

Nice report. I love the frozen waterfall. Aces!
Cool rocks in the third photo. I need to check a map, not familiar with this part of the Gabes.

Re: San Ysidro Mountain, The Thimble, White BM, Bonny BM
hvydrt, Hellhole Flat looks like a great destination with 4 nearby benchmarks: Hob, Tuck, Goat, and Webo. Looks like you can avoid crossing the canyon if you come from the west. However, my next trip to Anza-Borrego will be to Goat Canyon Trestle. Sean, A helmet is on my list, will have one in Janua...

San Ysidro Mountain, The Thimble, White BM, Bonny BM
I'm still unsure if these kind of reports are supposed to go in Other Socal Ranges or here under Trip Reports. I took a day off work Wednesday to hike San Ysidro Mountain. It is on the Sierra Club Hundred Peaks list and also the San Diego County Peaks list. It is also one of the highest in the Anza-...

Re: Stoddard, Frankish, Spring Hill
I didn't notice a bike course, but the junction was quite a bit more overgrown. This might be the same trail split as your second picture. I went left to head up Frankish. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i1183/albums/x471/tekewin/Stoddard%20Frankish/23485DF7-237B-41C1-84C3-77F2222...

Stoddard, Frankish, Spring Hill
I hiked Stoddard, Frankish, and Spring Hill for my first trip to the San Gabriel Mountains in a couple of months. The trail starts on Barrett-Stoddard dirt road, heading east past some houses and cabins, then south the rest of the way. About a mile up the road, I was startled by a mule deer buck tha...

Re: Footwear Experiment in Icehouse Canyon
December 2012 was my first real snow hike up Icehouse Canyon and I turned around before the saddle because my feet were numb and face was freezing. The next trip I was appropriately layered and carried handfuls of chemical warmers. It's winter for shizzle up in the mountains. I won't be trying any m...

Epic shot of the bighorn! He didn't seem the least bit worried about you.
I see a fair amount of snow on the ground. I am planning a trip up Icehouse in a couple of weeks and wondered how much the trails were covered past the saddle.
Could you see the 3Ts trail from the saddle or was it buried?

I am definitely interested, and I have one friend interested as well. I have some minimal experience in snow and have just completed my gear (except helmet). Grivel G10 crampons and BD raven axe. I plan to hit something high in the Gabes this month, not sure what yet. As long as there is not a work ...

Re: Non-SGM XC Routes
You can climb Modjeska from the Maple Springs Visitor Center parking lot. There is a use trail on the right about 200 ft. past the gate that heads into a dry creek. Head up the creek about 1/4 mile to a continuation on the left. From there, fire breaks and use trails over many bumps. I clocked it at...

Re: El Cajon Mountain and Silverdome
I don't know why they have such an early cut off time. You can park on the road outside the parking lot so you would not have to worry about being locked in the lot in case you got back late. I also don't know why they think this trail has some special heat problem that requires it to be closed the ...

Pretty creepy. I didn't know bears ate dear, or was it scavenging on a lion kill?Found a set of deer legs. Not a complete set, just three, all below the knee. I suspect the bear was the culprit.
