Re: Obama to designate chunk of San Gabriel Mountains a national
Most of the positive examples mentioned here started as individual private parcels or enterprises grandfathered in from another era when such things were undertaken on a smaller scale and with a less heavy-handed approach than today. A great number of such sites have been lost. I often wonder what ...

Re: decision-making heuristics
Good point about helmets. If you read an issue of Accidents in North American Mountaineering, one factor you'll see over and over in fatalities is that people weren't wearing a helmet. Another issue that comes through really clearly in Andrew's trip report is the use of some bad heuristics for deci...

Re: Obama to designate chunk of San Gabriel Mountains a national
The best way to manage land is for the government to get the hell out of the way of private individuals and organizations interested in developing the land. The lack of private land holdings in the Gabes results in a lack of government interest and ability to protect the land from natural and human...

Re: youtube:bear cub interaction w/ mountain bikers - June 2015
Breaks my heart... Very sad how the drought has impacted everything. Btw, is it protocol to report sightings? Just curious. No, it is not protocol to report bear sightings. Although, I would be tempted to let someone know of a solo bear cub hanging around a road. Tracker, are you still around this ...

Thanks, dima for the trip. Amazing!
Also, the two-striped garter snake was cool. Good to see that they are still in the Arroyo.

There was snow on the south-facing slope for about a day. I bet there is some snow on the north side on the trail, though.

Re: Handmade Maps
Still trying to figure out the year this was made... It's a real estate map, of course, for Chester Gillmore & Son. The business is still around (Gillmore Real Estate). They have a website with some historical info. The son joined the business in 1948, and the father retired in 1960. So the map...
