Re: General Conditions

Thanks snmtbaldy

Great advice. Sounds like the ski hut trail is safest and safe is good! I'd also be interested what Cucamonga peak is like in the snow. we tried last year after a slight dusting but turned back just after icehouse saddle because we had no microspikes. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: General Conditions

Hi everyone A buddy and me are planning a trip up baldy, to enjoy some of the new snow, either this weekend or next. We have lightweight crampons and snow shoes, but are not experienced in using an ice axe etc. so my questions are. How deep is the snow? What routes are passable without having master...

Re: Little Jimmy Springs

Thanks for the great advice as always. I think i got my springs confused! Such an amateur! I was thinking of the spring along icehouse canyon trail (is that Columbine?) Does anyone know if that is still flowing? Never-the-less knowing they'll be water at Little Jimmy springs is useful and gives me o...

Re: Little Jimmy Springs

A perennial topic i'm sure, but anyone know if water is following at little jimmy springs?

On a similar note, any suggestions for a one night backpack this weekend, where theres the chance to fill up on water and bag a decent sized peak?

Many thanks

Josh

Suggestions for Overnighter

Hi All I'm looking for an overnight trip this weekend with a bit of hiking involved (up ten mile/day) either in San Gabriels, San Bernadinos, San Gorgonios, or alternatively southern Sierras (ideally within 4 hours from los angeles). Something with creeks/river/lake would be nice given it'll be a ho...

Re: New Packpack

All packs ive not heard of, so thanks, i'll take a look.

I'm not a light packer, but i aspire to be so i think maybe buying a 50l(ish) bag may force my hand!

Thanks for the advice so far, feel free to keep it coming

New Packpack

Hoping for some advice on a new packpack. I need a backpack to do mainly one/two nights trips, trying to travel light and walking fairly long days. I love the styling of the climbing backpacks (i.e. Black diamond Speed 55 and Gregory Alpinista 50) but are they suitable for short backpacking trips? W...

Re: Training for Mt Whitney - Day Hikes

Wow - that looks a good trail. Fortunately (Unfortunately???) we've picked up company for Sundays hike and i think Iron Mt from Heaton Flat will be a little beyond them. Thats my excuse anyway! Next time its just me and my girl we'll do it - so thanks for the heads up. Really appreciate the advice i...

Okay thanks - there'll be at least two of us, so no solo hiking, but if it starts to look a little hairy then turn round we will!

Am i right in thinking there shouldnt be much in the way of snow up there this weekend? I'm sure ive seen a webcam for the summit anyway, so i guess i can check. Perhaps 'training' is t...

Re: Training for Mt Whitney - Day Hikes

Apologies - my origional post should have read ...five progressively higher peaks that you hike to train for MT WHITNEY.

Hike up - I would argue with you on those four (but I've only been in the area for a few months!)

Training for Mt Whitney - Day Hikes

Hi I'm looking for a good day hike in San Gabriels somewhere around 15 miles which won't require crampons etc - planning on going this sunday. On the suggestion of a couple of guys from this forum, I did the Mt wilson from Chantry Flats the other week and it was great - so thanks for that! I also di...

Day hike in San Gabriels

Hi Everyone

I'm looking for a 10-15mile hike in San Gabriels tomorrow. We would like a bit of snow and ice, but dont have snowshoes or crampons, and wont be using GPS so will need to follow a trail

Any ideas of hike which fit this description?

Thanks

Josh
