Re: Wilson trail closure
Whereabouts on the toll road did you encounter the machine? It might be county doing something. The sign and yellow tape were immediately after I hit the road and turned right on it. The work was probably a quarter of a mile farther up the road. I'm talking about the old Wilson toll road, the dirt ...

Wilson trail closure
I went up the main Wilson trail this morning expecting to go to the summit. When I got to the toll road, there was a sign saying "TRAIL CLOSED DANGER." Being a suicidal anarchist, I stepped over the yellow tape and kept going, to see if there was really any reason for the closure. Sure eno...

Re: Bobcat Fire: closure info, what's open
I don't normally go over there much anyway, so it's not a big deal to me, but I'm curious. Why is it still closed after such a long time?

Re: cheap, tall boots?
Perhaps wrapping your normal shoes in medical gauze would do the trick. Then just remove the gauze afterward. Wouldn't running in cowboy boots be a sudden change for you? I'm not talking about running it in the boots. I'm talking about reestablishing the trail, which would probably take a long time...

Re: cheap, tall boots?
My understanding of the scientific evidence is that for running injuries, your body will tend to adapt pretty well to most things if you give it time, but the highest risk for injury is when you make a sudden change in what you do. So I have zero interest in trying that style of shoe.

cheap, tall boots?
The South Ridge trail on Tahquitz Peak has a southern extension, which is in the area where the fire hit. I went over there the other day wearing nylon mesh running shoes and a pair of Dirty Girl trail running gaiters with the intention of running up it. Although May Valley Road is in great shape, t...

Re: Missing hiker on Baldy (Julian Sands)
Even a mild storm on Baldy is dangerous due to the risks of freezing, falls, altitude sickness and white out conditions. Sorry, just not buying it. A mild storm doesn't give you white-out conditions. AMS is virtually nonexistent at 10,000 ft. (The cabin of a passenger jet is equivalent to 8,000 ft....

Re: Missing hiker on Baldy (Julian Sands)
Was there a heavy storm going on the day he disappeared? I hadn't known that. I don't have any compunctions about going up there when all that's forecast is just a small amount of snowfall. It can be really pretty. The media is always super bad at reporting relevant factors in climbing and mountaine...

Re: Missing hiker on Baldy (Julian Sands)
Maybe he got disoriented coming down off the summit of Baldy, headed down into Goode by mistake. I've made similar mistakes coming off that summit in winter. In snow, all those ridges kind of look alike if you're not holding a compass and map in your hands. I don't want to be ghoulish or prurient, b...

Vivian Creek to San G
I did an out and back on the Vivian Creek trail to San G today, in my "run" style (i.e., run/jog/walk, with a little fanny pack). I ripped my precious favorite 1990 fanny pack when putting microspikes in it. You can't seem to get fanny packs this small anymore :-( I'll have to sew on a pat...

Avalanche at Snow Creek, San Jacintos
They don't say, but it looks like it's the Snow Creek side of the range, and the person got video as they were driving to Palm Springs. https://abc7.com/avalanche-san-jacinto- ... /12904319/ It's hard to tell the scale, but considering there's 10k feet of prominence, it looks like a pretty huge one.

The link at the top of #1 is about a high school basketball game...? The processes (parts that stick ou...

Here are some photos. (1) Unfolded cup. (2) Setup with microspikes, snack, and folded cup. (3) My normal setup with water and a snack. It is possible to fit both the water bottle and the microspikes in this pack, but it gets pretty tight.

Re: Old Mt. Wilson Trail
I've been doing Wilson once a week for the last few weeks, timing myself to the top. Last week there was a lot of snow and ice, so this week I made room for microspikes in my favorite itsy-bitsy fanny pack by substituting a folding silicone cup for my water bottle. So of course the snow had complete...

Re: Old Mt. Wilson Trail
I went up the trail today for an out and back to the summit. The bridge made me feel nice and safe. The poodle dog bush near the summit seems to be dying out, which is good. Creeks were running faster than usual, but not so much as to cause problems crossing. But -- Bean Town is out of business! So ...

I think that must be the Dan Richter who played the ape in the movie 2001. He's an active climber and mountaineer.

Does anyone know what the conditions are like on the main Mt Wilson trail right now? Washouts from the recent storms?

Re: Mission abort at South Fork
That was an ambitious attempt. If you made it to the saddle, were you going to go around and come over Little Charlton or go straight up the ridge? I went up the ridge (in summer) and it seemed like 45 degrees in places. That would have been spicy. I was planning on going from the junction up the r...

Yeah, probably a more common example in that area would be that people are like, "Let's do the bowl!," and then when they get there the conditions aren't good, but they do it anyway.

Re: Woman falls and dies on Baldy
Thanks, Sean, that makes more sense. The take-aways for me are (1) when judging your run-out, consider trees; (2) wear a helmet if you're going up a route that's notorious for rockfall. Not that I'm blaming her, but it's important to learn from accident reports how to reduce your own risk. This is a...

Mission abort at South Fork
On Friday I went up to the South Fork trailhead with the goal of doing Charlton on the last day of clear weather before the next storm came in on Saturday. I didn't know what conditions would be like, so I brought microspikes, snowshoes, and crampons. There was snow all the way down to the trailhead...

[merged from a redundant thread] There have been two deaths on Baldy recently. Very sad, RIP. Does anyone understand what exactly happened when Crystal Paula Gonzalez died? The OC Register says, "The hiker was trekking along on the Baldy Bowl trail, nearly nine miles long, when she slid on ice ...
