Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I went up the Vivian Creek trail today, but hit my turn-around time before getting to the summit. Beautiful day in the snow. Mill Creek canyon is melting out fast, but there is solid snow cover as soon as you get up into Vivian Creek canyon. I left my snowshoes in the car and didn't regret the decis...

San Jacinto, Round Valley -- faucet, trail construction?

I did San Jacinto Peak yesterday from the east. It was a beautiful day with unseasonably warm weather, about 70 degrees on the summit. I'm curious whether anyone has any info about some changes and construction I saw in the area near the meadow and ranger hut in Round Valley. At the east end of the ...

Re: Charging for rescues

Also, I recognize that not all socialists are Nazis. So unless you're promoting a white supremacists brand of socialism, I'm not going to call you a Nazi. I simply believe this particular issue boils down to your moral view of taxation. I was trying to make a joke, but humor doesn't always come acr...

I would love to have a sticker for my climbing helmet. Happy to help share costs. I'll take whatever design other people want, but if it's got an in-joke that I don't understand, then I either want (a) an explanation, (b) a promise not to ridicule me for not being old-timer enough to know what the j...

@VermillionPearlGirl : A lot of what you're saying is more an expression of general left-wing views on economic policy than an analysis of this particular problem. > People will die if they charge for rescues, so it's simply morally impossible to do so. There are lots of ways in which trade-offs ca...

Re: Recommendations for a loop in Gabrielino/Brown Mountain/Millard Canyon area?

I went down Gabrielino Trail today with my dogs and a friend who's recovering from knee surgery. We did it one way, from Switzer Falls to JPL, with a car shuttle. My general impression is that it's very pleasant and shady. There were very few mountain bikers, which surprised me. Uncle Rico wrote: I ...

Tahquitz? Maybe you have in mind only sport climbing? Or if "Los Angeles" means only LA County, then I don't know why you need to say "summer."

San Gorgonio: Limber Pine Springs and Trail Fork Springs, 2018 Sep. 14

I did an out and back today on the San Bernardino Peak Divide Trail from Angelus Oaks to near Jepson. Limber Pine Springs has good enough flow that you can rapidly fill a water bottle. Trail Fork Springs is much slower: I was able to fill a water bottle, but it took a lot of fiddling around to make ...

If you donate ( http://www.rmru.org/donate.htm ) a little money to Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit (which handles the San Jacintos and the rock climbing areas near Idyllwild), they'll send you their newsletter, with extremely interesting writeups on every mission. Recommendations for a loop in Gabrielino/Brown Mountain/Millard Canyon area?

Now that the Gabrielino Trail is open and the temps are cooling down at the low elevations, I'm thinking of working out a trail-run loop in this area. I've only visited the area once, which was kind of a disaster because I entered without realizing it was closed after the Station Fire. I blundered t...

Cool TR!

It's weird that there are two completely separate Coldwater Canyons in the same area. The other one is to your north if you're at the saddle between Telegraph and Thunder.

I know what you mean. I've been doing the same trail run over and over because it's the only one that's not on fire.

Re: San Gorgonio Wilderness closed to hiking due to Valley Fire

The fire is mostly contained, and it's now legal to hike some but not all of the trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness:

Vivian and South Fork are legal, but you can't do stuff to the south and west, such as Momyer.

The cops say it was arson set by a guy who lives up there. When they came to arrest him, he got naked and brandished a sword.

There is some good scientific evidence described in House and Johnston, Training for the new alpinism, pp. 356, 360, 362. The main thing is to acclimatize as much as possible. There are a bunch of different physiological mechanisms for acclimatization. Some are rapid, and some take weeks to be compl...

Snow Crest Lodge

Anyone know what's up with the Snow Crest Lodge at Manker Flat on Mt. Baldy? Judging from Yelp reviews, it got pretty run down. Later I saw a listing on Zillow. (Fantasies about buying it and starting a second career.) Now it looks like it's under renovation. Does it have a new owner?

Trails and water sources in Little Tahquitz Valley or Wellman Divide area?

Since the San Gorgonio Wilderness is closed off right now due to the Valley Fire, I've been trying to cook up a plan for a nice trail run in the San Jacintos, which I'm less familiar with. My current idea is a loop/lollipop where I go from Humber Park down Ernie Maxwell Tr., up the south ridge trail...

The Big Bear Grizzly is reporting that the Valley Fire may smolder "until heavy rains or snow arrive this fall." Sounds like hiking trails are going to be closed for a matter of months. The penalty for going on the trails is $5000 and 6 months in jail. http://www.bigbeargrizzly.net/news/va...

San Gorgonio Wilderness closed to hiking due to Valley Fire

Info: https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5900/ http://sgwa.org/ All the hiking trails in the San Gorgonio Wilderness are closed. I'm guessing the closure will end when they get the fire 100% contained. It's pretty insane the terrain the firefighters are having to work in -- this is right at the "...
