Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
Why is it sad (unless that was sarcasm)? The guy was a husband and a father and what he chose to do was stupid and irresponsible and not representative of the ideals of his profession. He was an idiot, and now he's a dead idiot. These little "tragedies" make the world go 'round. I suppose ...

Re: Hildreth Peak from Hwy 33
Yeah, it used to be that the road from Hwy 33 to 3 Sisters and beyond was open on a seasonal basis. The peak was traditionally done from the 3 Sisters. No more. That road hasn't been open to motor vehicles for a number of years. These closures have been happening a lot in the Los Padres. -DS

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
Absolutely could have been the case. Have had two guys die of meth OD at my hospital just this week. One, a 28 year old and died of a massive heart attack, and the other, 32 years old, died of cerebral edema (brain swelling). That's some bad shit. When you've seen what it does to people first hand y...

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
Hey Rico, I alluded to the disparity between what you or I could expect (in terms of SAR response/resources) versus what this guy got, simply by dint of him being a firefighter. You raise a valid point. Media coverage of this event has been geared toward not making this guy look like an idiot. For t...

CougarMagic, Nope, had no idea that he'd contacted me at some point in the past. The nature of his question indicated a distinct lack of experience and a general knowledge deficit regarding the outdoors. His question was: "Hey David...ive spent the last hour reading about your adventures...I ra...

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
Good morning, Aside from the massive multi-agency response (which the rest of us should never expect because we're not sacred cows, um, I meant firefighters), they used search dogs, scent dogs, helicopters and drones with FLIR, they even used a special animal rescue team from LA County. A ridiculous...

I've been considering doing Sulphur Peak tomorrow (there is no trail) and glassing for vultures over what I keep hearing/reading is the search area. -DS

Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek
I agree, at first glance this seems to be a confusing case. However, as with most stories of a similar nature it can probably be reduced to a series of bad choices. 1.) He brought his dog down the Sespe, which is not a dog friendly kind of terrain. The dog is a hunting breed and instinctively progra...

Devil's Heart Peak via new route: Coronary Couloir Class III
I'm just back from a 22:00 hour day of mixed versions of Hell, culminating in a new climb up a forbidden and forgotten peak made more remote by the approach problems. Check it out at:

Ah, so you're training to be an army ant. A remarkable animal the army ant. Virtually unstoppable. Like little Tonka trucks. Find your inner army ant and walk the Gene Marshall in a day. Just be sure to start on the Reyes Creek side. You'll dig Beartrap. -Stillman

Topa and Hines is an excellent day with high milage and lots of gain, as you well know having just been there. That's a tough day, you should be proud of that one. -Stillman

Hey, that's awesome. I really like that Chorro to Reyes route. And as for Horn Canyon, got enough rocks to go with your climb? Steep ones you've been picking. Builds strong bones and teeth. -Stillman

Monte Arido Peak (HPS) & Old Man Mountain (HPS)
It's been a while since I dropped anything on SGMDF and I thought this one was good enough to share. Linking these two peaks using the route I took comes in at 26 miles for the day with over 7,000 feet of total gain. It's a long and extremely strenuous day. Uncle R, u suk.. Kidding. Yeah, the route I've been looking at isn't really a route. I figure it'll have to be via Murietta to the ridge and then it's game-on. It may not go. We will just have to see. -DCS

Re: Lockwood Peak and San Guillermo Mountain, 12/16/12
UR, yeah I've been looking at that one. White Ledge Peak is most definitely on the short-list. I haven't identified a route that looks doable in any normal sense of the word and I don't know any body who's done it. I have a feeling it's gonna hurt. -Stillman
