Bloody Mountain
Day two of my Bishop blast had my sites set on Bloody Mountain (SPS #141), 12,552' south of Mammoth Lakes. The name refers to the blood red glow reflected from the red rock in the morning. The effect is best viewed from Mammoth Lakes. Bloody can be a short hike (5.6 miles round trip) if you can driv...

What burned?
What burned? Behold (click on the image; very un-exciting otherwise): whatburned2.gif This is Sentinel images (from paid caltopo) before the fire and on Sat (after most of it was done). The fire wasn't done done yet, but that's the latest we have today. So... the East Fork has been stripped clean. T...

Double feature: tahquitz and cornell peak
What a weekend: took Dima out to Idyllwild for his first trad or multipitch climb and he absolutely crushed it; made short work of white maiden's (5.8 var, 800'), then since we finished relatively early, went for extra credit up El camino real (10-, 500'). We couldn't resist doing the classic laybac...

Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
The goal of the day was very simple: To get to this strange building that is next to Inspiration Point to see if it was mine related. The following image is from 1960 and has the building circled. hut.jpg On the side, I have been trying to locate all the mines in the Monitor Consolidated Claims with...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
The misplaced "Muir Peak" label is an annoying error from the USGS map. I think the error occurred on the '95 version, but don't quote me on that. It's been awhile since I did the research. Also, the historical photos are of Gotchy's cabin south of Mt. Muir, near Panorama Point, not Inspir...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
I took this photo at the same time as I took the ones @jeko1034 posted at the Historical Society. Here's an OCR copy/paste off the photo. L.T. Gotchy • Although he never lived in Altadena, L.T. Gotchy personified the iconoclastic nature of our community. • After serving in the army in WWII, he worke...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
Speaking of Gotchy, I got a copy of this letter he wrote about Ed Nohr who built the AMRT Cabin 16 in the Millard tract. As you can see, Gotchy was prone to a great deal of hyperbole. Also, he casually mentions Ed "terminating" a guy in a fight...anyways, all I know is what you see in the ...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
near Panorama Point I've never heard a definitive answer I was satisfied with. Do you guys think Panorama Point is right their by the water tank at the end of OM&M? Another plausible option is at the dogleg on OM&M where the ridge heads down into Eaton above the falls. OM&M ended before...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
Got it! So Gotchy's cabin was actually right on Mount Muir! So the cabin I visited wasn't that cabin and was probably another in the tract right? Right. You visited #2, which I think was Ed Tobin's cabin. I dug up this photo from Paul but it's hard to see the cabin and it doesn't say who lived ther...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji
I dug up a few more items. This is the best quality image I have of the Cliffe House (Mt. Lowe Tract #1). MT LOWE TRACT CABIN 1 WURMSER.jpg The filename includes "Wurmser." Maybe that's who owned it, but I don't remember how I acquired this file. Probably from Paul. Here is a photo titled ...

Re: Valley Forge Canyon
I was poking around some of this area and a few other spots near by this weekend. I found remnants of an oil burning stove, a knife, small glass bottles, and a few other relics. I got some video and a few pictures, but didn't post video from this spot. I'll share some images although I didn't get ev...

The road from above is clearly seen in the magic high-resolution DEM map:
No clear roads or trails below that. Were you looking for something specific? Or are you exploring every single canyon?

Re: Valley Forge Canyon
Pretty Much, there are no huge drops so it's mostly just saying on then west fork (going back the way I came). Last time I went it was a little overgrown in parts and very very dry. I have some pictures I actually pulled up recently. There was pretty much nothing in the reservoir. I think this was F...

Alamo Peak from Lockwood Valley Road
Years ago I tried to summit Cobblestone Peak with some people. We drove from Hungry Valley to the end of the road by Sewart peak, started the hike, and then hiked White Mountain instead for some reason. I think it the weather was weird or something? I don't recall. But I do recall the road we drove ...

Cover your boots in duct tape and try to get another month out of them! Thanks for the TR. I don't like your blood soaked shirt; it makes me imagine you dangerously flying over your handlebars into rocks.

Peak Bagging Day
I've always noticed that rock pile that is north of the 2 after you pass Three Points and wanted to go there. I manufactured enough peaks to make the drive out there worthwhile. I first started at Rosenita Saddle and took the ridge to the SE away from Hillyer. The first bump you get to is Peak 5,868...

Akawie, Vetter, Mooney, and Devil
I drove up the ACH to pick up some easy HPS peaks. These are pretty far down on my list since a lot of the HPS peaks are garbage. But my standards are low, and they fill the time between more interesting adventures. Nothing worth noting at P7160. Mount Akawie is a small bump across the highway from ...

In 2007 I did the same 3 peaks one day (minus Akawie).
In April 2009 I was able to drive up to the observatory although the road was heavily rutted.

CHANTRY FLATS
This morning Jeff and I checked out Chantry Flats. We really had no specific trails in mind but we were both excited to see Sturtevant Falls. Thank God It wasn't crowded. Re: CHANTRY FLATS
It was nice to see this area with no trash, I don't expect that to last much longer. Don't know which trail we were on, we took the dirt road down and then walked to the falls. From there we backtracked a little to the junction and walked up the left fork, which reached another junction where we tur...

Mount Wilson from middle Eaton Canyon
Yesterday I climbed Mount Wilson from Eaton Canyon, a bit above Idlehour. The idea was to pick a side drainage, and follow the creek as much as possible, ending up somewhere at the summit area, with a victory coffee at the Cosmic Cafe. It worked! The river has falls https://gal.secretsauce.net/trave...

Peaks 7,022 and 6,994-Chumash Wilderness
One of my new things is to decide to do a hike and have multiple options as far as what I am going to do during the hike. Los Pinetos from the San Fernando Valley
Well, if my searching of the board archives is correct, this route does not have a trip report here yet. A blessed onshore flow allowed for some early season adventures in my hiking radius last week. A hike I've had on my to-do list for a long time is the venerable Los Pinetos from the south, baggin...

I'm surprised no one has posted on this, including me, since I've been up there many a time now. Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge
On Sunday JeffH myself and Sean did a very enjoyable lollipop loop of Strawberry Peak starting from the road to Colby Camp on the Tujunga side. Great hike. I'm taking a little different approach to the TR this time. Let me preface this by saying, I'm the sort of hiker who is attracted to going off t...
