Valley Forge Canyon

A little while ago, Paul asked about a mystery road in Valley Forge Canyon . So I had this topic in the back of my mind until yesterday, when Willie and I contemplated alternative adventures after being stopped in Woodwardia Canyon by a waterfall obstacle. I suggested going down Valley Forge Canyon ...

Chill-ass rattlesnake

We found this baby on the Heaton Not-Flat Trail.

Re: EAGLE REST, PEAK 6000 & ANTIMONY

Instead of a new post, I thought I'd just add on to yours. The trip from Tecuya Ridge was harder than I expected. I underestimated how much water I needed, so it was a hot, miserable trip on the way back. I wasted a lot of time and energy crashing through brush. The summit area was really cool and w...

Re: EAGLE REST, PEAK 6000 & ANTIMONY

Wow, big day! Never hiked in the San Emigdio Mountains before, looking forward to a chance to change that. Looks like a stark change in geology with Eagle Rest becoming sandstone as one nears the central valley, but then Antimony is more San Gabriel plutonic intrusive igneous in character. Never stu...

'Gnomes Bridge'

In 2017 my sister in law was hired by Weber University in Ogden, Utah, and then a couple years later my parents bought a house along the edge of the city to spend more time with my brother's family. I thus had a date with the Wasatch Range. 3 years in, there have been many follow-up dates, and the r...

Reaching the crest of the Wasatch, we bagged No Name Peak 9061, and enjoyed views to the east of Ogden Valley. Re: Windy Gap Trail (Crystal Lake)

I haven't been all the way to Windy Gap in awhile, but Jeff and I just walked the lower segment of this trail. Might be my imagination, but it seems slightly less rocky than before, as if a crew has raked it recently.

Re: Crystal Lake Trail Question

Jeff and I walked the Lost Ridge trail yesterday. The upper half is moderately brushy. Completely avoiding the overgrowth might test your mountain kung fu. A few downed trees can be easily negotiated. The lower half is better, especially the section with the steps. Perhaps a crew has trimmed it rece...

Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024

This past week I've managed to clear most of the vegetation on the trail to Bailey Canyon Falls. It's a short trail. The tread needs a lot more work which I'll try to get to this week and next. But it's worth the 30 minutes or so to go see the falls which, surprisingly to me, are still flowing well ...

Re: Crystal Lake Trail Question (Lost Ridge)

Is the Lost Ridge Trail also referred to as the Sunset Ridge Nature Trail? IMG_8930.jpg The sign above was somewhere near the upper part of the Lost Ridge Trail I think. I did the Lost Ridge Trail in 2011 and it was tree fall, bushy hell. Tree fall - an easy one. I didn't take pictures of the rough ...

That's just N of Middle Mermaid, I guess. I've photos from West Mermaid , but they're of the wrong side of the ridge. Headsizeburrito has photos from Middle Mermaid itself , but can't see the thing you're talking about. So I guess you want a view from Triplet Rocks... When I was there I made a panor...

The mountains, stripped naked

Yall may have heard of lost cities being found in the Central American jungle using LIDAR scans. If not, go look that up right now! An airplane flies over the jungle, and uses a laser scanner pointed at the ground to measure lots and lots of distances. Most of the laser returns come from the trees, ...

Boundary Peak, NV

Day two of my White Mountains weekend featured Boundary Peak (13,141'). It's the state high point of Nevada, even though it's a lesser peak in the White Mountains that spilled over the border. I started a little before 7 AM from the Queen Canyon trailhead. The drive on Queen Canyon Road was about 6....

Re: Devil's Backbone Trail (Mt. Baldy)

The Devil's Backbone trail is still there. It's in good shape. The alternative, contouring route along the summit push, however, has seen better days. Much of that tread is covered in rocks. The main path is fine though.

Palisade Glacier

My wife planned a backpacking trip to the Big Pine Creek area with a permit for the third lake. I had only seen this area through haze from the summit of Cloudripper. There were nine or more lakes in this basin fed from the high peaks. Backpacking is not my favorite way to visit the mountains. I pre...

Mental endurance in hiking

This has been a random thought on my mind for a bit. When people think about hiking, they usually think in terms of physical endurance. Rightly so. It is a physical activity, walking with whatever degree of distance and gain. I haven't turned back many times due to physical endurance, although it ha...

Divide Peak and Landells Peak

Sean and I bagged a couple of minor peaks near San Jacinto. We rode the tram up to Mountain Station, got our permits, then hiked south on the Willow Springs Trail. The trail eventually goes all the way to Humber Park in Idyllwild. At one mile, there was a junction with the High Peak trail and the Hi...

Re: creeks with minnow fishing pools?

Probably wrong time of year. You might try Aliso (Zelzah) or Limekiln (Tampa). Those are 'park' and have good trail networks, cross the creeks a few times, always have frogs singing in the eve. West end of Vanowen, the 'south fork' of Bell Canyon, might have some. There are huge water tanks on the ...

20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop

A few years back, Dima and I rode up to the top of White Mtn Peak from Grandview campground above 8,000ft. Clearly, the pure way to do it would be to ride from the lowest realistic point, that being either Big Pine (a lot of pavement), or Bishop (nearly all dirt). I took my gravel bike last time whi...

Re: 20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop

Things I knew before but was reminded of on this trip: the mountain doesn't give a shit about you. It doesn't care how young or old or fit you are. You will never conquer it. You can choose to test yourself on it or stay at home and watch TV. The mountain will always be there, indifferent. I have ne...

It's a passion project and something I think people in this community might enjoy. I hope some of you use it to crea...

Re: Ultralight overnight with a toddler to Cooper Canyon

Thanks for the report. I was also in Cooper Canyon recently. One area of the creek bed burned pretty badly, but the rest was still nice. You might have missed this stretch because you entered via the PCT rather than the Burkhart.
