Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
Thanks HikeUp. Everytime I've been there it's a little challenging with all the ruts and overgrowth.

Re: Photo Request: Twin Peaks Area
That's just N of Middle Mermaid, I guess. I've photos from West Mermaid , but they're of the wrong side of the ridge. Headsizeburrito has photos from Middle Mermaid itself , but can't see the thing you're talking about. So I guess you want a view from Triplet Rocks... When I was there I made a panor...

Re: White Mountain Peak on bikes
Well, three years after your post, I made it to the top of White Mountain. I'll add a few recent photos, but your documentation is pretty thorough. I considered trying to bike it, but didn't want to worry about getting the tire pressure right or risk damaging the bike. I drove about halfway up White...

Re: Devil's Backbone Trail (Mt. Baldy)
The Devil's Backbone trail is still there. It's in good shape. The alternative, contouring route along the summit push, however, has seen better days. Much of that tread is covered in rocks. The main path is fine though.

Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?
I know from reading here that Lookout Mountain has been pretty much only accessible via Bear Canyon Trail for a while and even then appears like it's some difficult route-finding. From some deeper Googling it sounds like the mountain used to be accessible via Cattle / Cow Canyon (i.e. Glendora Ridge...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?
For those interested the property containing the private road is for rent... Digging into the parcel information ( parcel 1, parcel 2 ) it appears the owners who purchased the property in 2022 triggering a reassessment at $1.6m and $2.2m respectively are now past due on their 2024 tax bill ($4...

20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop
A few years back, Dima and I rode up to the top of White Mtn Peak from Grandview campground above 8,000ft. Clearly, the pure way to do it would be to ride from the lowest realistic point, that being either Big Pine (a lot of pavement), or Bishop (nearly all dirt). I took my gravel bike last time whi...

Re: 20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop
Things I knew before but was reminded of on this trip: the mountain doesn't give a shit about you. It doesn't care how young or old or fit you are. You will never conquer it. You can choose to test yourself on it or stay at home and watch TV. The mountain will always be there, indifferent. I have ne...

Re: I won't quit
After conferring with various woodland creatures, I have decided to quit after all. I know I said I would never quit, but I'm a foolish old man who's losing his mind, so you're a fool to believe anything I say. With that said, I fully endorse Bigfoot's daughter, Cackala, in the upcoming election. Sh...

Re: Ultralight overnight with a toddler to Cooper Canyon
Also I should point out I created and recently launched Trip Report . It's something that I always wish existed, so I learned how to build it, and then I did (it took a few years...). It's a passion project and something I think people in this community might enjoy. I hope some of you use it to crea...

Re: Canyon Crest Road Trail to Millard
I read the California Appeals Court case . The easements are for "hiking and equestrian trails." Other activities are not mentioned. In your pursuit of climbing, I wouldn't use the argument that climbing is not different from hiking or riding horses. First, it's inherently more dangerous t...

Re: Mount George Davis
I remember the Mars Bonfire and George Wysup controversy. There was a lot of conversation about what constituted sumitting a peak as some HPS peaks required third class climbing. They were so worried about finishing lists and the conventional opinion was getting to the bottom of a climb was a summit...

South Ridge of Lawlor
I decided to see what it would be like hiking a firebreak at around 80 degrees and see if I would like to do this next week. This ridge is one of the most iconic climb in the San Gabes. Everyone that does it says it is memorable and usually not in a good way which means it is awesome. It is famous f...

Double feature: tahquitz and cornell peak
What a weekend: took Dima out to Idyllwild for his first trad or multipitch climb and he absolutely crushed it; made short work of white maiden's (5.8 var, 800'), then since we finished relatively early, went for extra credit up El camino real (10-, 500'). We couldn't resist doing the classic laybac...

Since we are scrutinizing peak names in that area, what's the deal with having both a Muir Peak AND "Mount Muir"? Screen Shot 2024-09-23 at 8.04.30 PM.png And then OSM has "Muir Peak" where Cal Topo has "Mount Muir" with no name where Forest Service map and Cal Topo ha...

Peak Bagging Day
I've always noticed that rock pile that is north of the 2 after you pass Three Points and wanted to go there. I manufactured enough peaks to make the drive out there worthwhile. I first started at Rosenita Saddle and took the ridge to the SE away from Hillyer. The first bump you get to is Peak 5,868...
