20120304 Schvaterfall Cyn First Descent - 300ft'er!!!!
Amanda and I just got back from doing the first descent of a previously un-named canyon that drains into Bichota Canyon near Rattlesnake Peak. It was relatively tough, with lots of bushwhacking. The rating is somewhere around 4BIV. The 4 is for the multistage rapp, as well as the fun anchors (rock ...

Re: Crystal Lake News
If you don't get chili and nacho cheese in your sundae, you're part of the problem and should feel shame.

20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop
A few years back, Dima and I rode up to the top of White Mtn Peak from Grandview campground above 8,000ft. Clearly, the pure way to do it would be to ride from the lowest realistic point, that being either Big Pine (a lot of pavement), or Bishop (nearly all dirt). I took my gravel bike last time ...

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed
No, I don't think it's warranted. It's government overreach. On top of that, it's overreach mandated by people who don't know a damn thing about nature.
Sell the peons a 'reasonable' package, and then extend it over and over again. Tighten the noose. The 'managerial class' of govt gets more power ...

Re: The 3rd-annual moonlight baldy winter climb
I set off from Best Cocina around 0945 to meet Dima in Claremont around noon. I had my mtb (Trek 1120) with my boots, crampons, axe, and other mountaineering jazz in my bags strapped to the bike, and took it easy. One thing I really like about these Baldy Full Moon trips is waking up late. You don't ...

Taco's Alpine Touring Bike Project
I intend for this to be a thread I update as I build and improve this project.
I want a bike that I can go nearly anywhere with, simply and reliably, while also being lightweight enough to pick up, push, pull, carry under my arm, carry on my back, and all the sorta crap you gotta do with a bike in ...

Re: The 3rd-annual moonlight baldy winter climb
I’ve followed the ridge proper the whole way to the top of Harwood in winter a few times. We considered it but I didn’t think it was wise given how crappy I felt and other factors like the unconsolidated snow, small cornices, and high wind at night.
