Made my way up the Pratt Trail to the summit of Nordhoff Peak in the Los Padres on Sunday. Beautiful day to be out and about with the clouds rolling in.

The Vortex
The Vortex, whose name is excessively dramatic, is a deep bowl that has been carved into the slickrock by wind, rain, and geologic forces. It sits just inside the Red Mountain Wilderness area between the small town of Gunlock and the Dammeron Valley. The trail head is along Lower Sand Cove Road whic...

Kolob Arch
Kolob Arch sits in the Kolob region of Zion National Park. At 287' long, and 75' thick, it is reputed to be one of largest natural arches in the world. The conventional route to Kolob Arch is by way of the La Verkin Creek Trail that starts at Lee Pass trailhead here: [latlon=37.45213,-113.19140]. Zi...

Tempi'po'op Trail
Ok, last one from Southern Utah. Since this trail is about a half mile from where I've been staying, I hit this after work when I don't have or can't take more time. This is an easy trail that traverses the cliff ledge above the Santa Clara River for a couple of miles. The attraction here, aside fro...

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
Nice work lads. I've never been to the falls. Now I have a reason to go and check it out.

Re: Palisade Glacier
Very nice teke. That is one of my favorite areas, but I've not been to the glacier. Looks cool.
I know you're not big on backpacking, so big ups for making that happen for Leisa.

Re: Bridge Fire
CalFire has a pretty good 3D map of the burn and evacuation areas here:

Damn interesting thread guys. Thanks for posting all this info.
Ed Nohr sounds like a total stud and looks a bit like Hunter S. Thompson. Ha ha.

Teepee Trail and Hawks Recon
It's been quite awhile since I've ventured into the San Gabes. Between driving burn out, summer temps, and multiple trips out of state to look after my aged mother, I just haven't had the time or inclination to go. But with the pleasant temps yesterday, I decided to get in a little front country rom...

Children of the Liberator
Nothing particularly new here other than the re-establishment of Owen Brown's headstone atop Little Roundtop, but still cool and interesting local history nonetheless. There used to be a member here who was an attorney and his son produced stuff like this for KCET as I recall. Really great content. ...

Burger Peak via Forsyth Creek
About 45 minutes north of St. George, Utah sits the Pine Valley Mountains. They rise to over 10,000 feet providing a stark contrast to the red sandstone that is the hallmark of the lower elevations. The mountains hold snow deep into the spring which provides a beautiful backdrop to the local landsca...

Hawks Peak from Falls Ridge
Yesterday on a whim, I went back to the Angeles for some unfinished business. I wanted to get to Hawks Peak but didn't want to tread the same ground I did recently, so decided to approach from the Angeles Crest Station instead of the end of Harter Lane. The potential downside to that approach is a l...

Re: Children of the Liberator
I know this will sound a little like a trip report, but i don't really intend it that way. I made the pilgrimage to Owen Brown's grave Sunday afternoon. Instead of parking at the end of El Prieto Road and walking up the road, I started in the Arroyo Seco, went up El Prieto Canyon, and then backtrack...

Re: Nordhoff Peak via Pratt Trail
The Mrs. wants to try for Whitney next summer when she hits the big 6-0, so we went up Pratt to Nordhoff yesterday to gauge fitness and begin a series of training hikes. Nice day to be out. Warm enough but a bit overcast to make the skies interesting. Trail is in acceptable shape. There are a couple...

Re: Pirates on the Moon
Sean assured me this would be a uniquely stupid outing. Happy to report that it was actually quite a fun day with several of the forum goofballs.
