Akawie, Vetter, Mooney, and Devil

I drove up the ACH to pick up some easy HPS peaks. These are pretty far down on my list since a lot of the HPS peaks are garbage. But my standards are low, and they fill the time between more interesting adventures. Nothing worth noting at P7160.

Mount Akawie is a small bump across the highway from ...

Re: CHANTRY FLATS

There is an upper and lower trail above the falls, it sounds like you took the upper until it merged with the lower and came back along that one which follows the creek and goes right above the falls. Will have to get up there soon and try the firebreak to Manzanita Ridge and Mt. Wilson. It looks ...

The Death Valley Albatross

Peak summer is behind us, so Death Valley is visitable again. I just went over there to check out the Albatross .

I started walking in the morning from Towne pass. Looking back down from a bit up the hill:

Mount Wilson from middle Eaton Canyon

Yesterday I climbed Mount Wilson from Eaton Canyon, a bit above Idlehour. The idea was to pick a side drainage, and follow the creek as much as possible, ending up somewhere at the summit area, with a victory coffee at the Cosmic Cafe. It worked!

The river has falls

Peaks 7,022 and 6,994-Chumash Wilderness

One of my new things is to decide to do a hike and have multiple options as far as what I am going to do during the hike. The original thought of this hike was to get to a viewpoint of the Cuyama Badlands. Much of this has been closed by the Forest Service since they don't want to fix the road that ...

Favorite spots in Los Padres

Hi I’m new here. I don’t know how I found this forum but I am so excited to have found so many people in love with Los Padres. It’s truly magical. Since everyone here seems to deeply respect nature I thought I’d ask for some others favorites?

Mine would be Manzana both west and east (I need to ...

Re: Icehouse to Fontana San Gabriels Linkup

Did it this weekend and that descent to Joe Elliot was absolutely heinous. Close to impassable, we came out extremely cut up. The better route would have been to descend the steep (but grassy and secure-looking) ridgeline / gully into the wash. Honestly even if they trail had been clear it's a ...

Re: Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge

I've read that this route is well-marked but neither of us saw anything painted or drawn or flagged along the way.

Maybe someone cleaned the graffiti up? No Kamper Ken?

Hawks Peak from Falls Ridge

Yesterday on a whim, I went back to the Angeles for some unfinished business. I wanted to get to Hawks Peak but didn't want to tread the same ground I did recently, so decided to approach from the Angeles Crest Station instead of the end of Harter Lane. The potential downside to that approach is a ...

Winston Ridge, Hillyer, Sally

On Friday, I knocked out more easy HPS peaks off the ACH. I had hiked Winston Peak as a warm up 10 years ago before my first hike with Sean to Twin Peaks. I got the Ridge this time, going over P6903 on the way. It's a nice area with sparse pines. The Winston Ridge register was in a circle of stones ...

Re: MONTE CRISTO MINE TOUR

Super cool! Yeah, wish I could have joined, would have definitely appreciated the geology.

According to my geologic maps, they dug their shaft into the moon-rock anorthosite, but pretty close to its contact with Mendenhall Gneiss and Mt Lowe Granitic intrusion, so knowing the Gabes and knowing 200 ...

San Jacinto via Snow Creek

Timing Is Everything

Report and pics

Snow Creek isn't a viable route every year. The mountain needs the right amount of snowfall at the right times in the right places with the right temperature systems during our short SoCal winter. Thankfully, January and February made it clear that 2024 ...

Re: Monrovia & Rankin but no Clamshell

Awesome! I didn't know you could drive up there. I went to Rankin in February I think, but the snow made it to slippery to get to Monrovia Peak on the ridge line in water shoes. I may have gone up Clamshell, but not known it. I saved some pictures fortunately at Rankin. It was gorgeous up there ...

Re: MONTE CRISTO MINE TOUR

Neat! I've never been in this one, but I did find some near by a couple years ago. I noticed some copper carbonate minerals on the rocks near a section of the mountain with a bunch of adits. It would be nice to check that spot out in the future if there's another opportunity to visit. I need to ...

Re: MT LEWIS 8396

Thanks for the beta. I tried to get Lewis early in the year before learning about the long term road closure.

I also considered walking down the road as you did, but I'm not sure I want Lewis bad enough for a 12-miler. I think I'll wait until the road reopens.

Really sad they painted over the ...

Death Valley Buttes

My wife and I spent a couple of days in Death Valley with our kids. My plan was to hike Titanothere Peak and Thimble Peak, but access to both of those was on the closed Titus Canyon Road. Instead, we decided to climb the two Death Valley Buttes that are close to Daylight Pass Road.

You can park ...

It was a fun hike, different for me because I usually just walk along trails so this was a slightly more technical journey. I spent the night on Saturday, while setting up camp I realized that I didn't have any trekking poles to support my tent- they are usually in my vehicle but I'm driving a ...

Re: Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024
