While hiking around Crystal Lake, Jeff found a quarter.

He also found a mouthpiece.

And a bicycle.

They're his now, except for the bike, which we left in case the kid returned for it.

Bailey Canyon Falls: July 2024

This past week I've managed to clear most of the vegetation on the trail to Bailey Canyon Falls. It's a short trail. The tread needs a lot more work which I'll try to get to this week and next. But it's worth the 30 minutes or so to go see the falls which, surprisingly to me, are still flowing well ...

Seeking trad multipitch climbing partner

Aloha, anyone here climb technical rock? I like hiking and all that, but really dig the high alpine stuff and long multi pitches. I can lead trad 10s and follow harder. I live in Venice and often climb at cliffs of id and can easily take fri-sun for trips. Would love to get up on more high sierra ro...

I conned Sean into doing a survey of this route today. We'll see if any of his ideas ever get implemented! lol

Re: Where are they? Film & TV edition

I cheated it was filmed in the San Gabriels. If you want more hints, here is a behind the scenes video showing the filming in more detail. It is a very obvious and popular place.

Re: Palisade Glacier

Very nice teke. That is one of my favorite areas, but I've not been to the glacier. Looks cool.

I know you're not big on backpacking, so big ups for making that happen for Leisa.

Another section that we re-routed to get the trail away from the creek bed.

Old trail followed creek bed on left, new trail on right.

Mental endurance in hiking

This has been a random thought on my mind for a bit. When people think about hiking, they usually think in terms of physical endurance. Rightly so. It is a physical activity, walking with whatever degree of distance and gain. I haven't turned back many times due to physical endurance, although it ha...

Frankish Peak via Stoddard

I made an unsuccessful attempt at Frankish peak last Friday (30AUG24) morning around 0730. Stoddard has become a somewhat regular before-work run as it's shaded, has pretty views, and is a quick drive from my home. On a recent run, I found myself curious about the Barrett Stoddard Truck Trail's cont...

Mount George Davis

Mount George Davis (12,691') is the high point between the north fork of Bishop Creek and Wonder Lakes in the John Muir Wilderness. It's on the south side of the Piute Pass Trail across from Mount Emerson. I noticed it recently when my wife and I hiked to Piute Pass and when I looked it up, I found ...

Re: Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji

Speaking of Gotchy, I got a copy of this letter he wrote about Ed Nohr who built the AMRT Cabin 16 in the Millard tract. As you can see, Gotchy was prone to a great deal of hyperbole. Also, he casually mentions Ed "terminating" a guy in a fight...anyways, all I know is what you see in the ...

Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

Over the weekend some of us celebrated the forum's anniversary with a trip to Monte Cristo Campground and hikes to Rabbit, Granite and Roundtop. Cecelia and I started by driving to the campground on Friday afternoon and securing site #11, which has space for several tents under a big sycamore tree. ...

Re: Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

Thanks for organizing, Sean and to everybody else for coming out! We hiked some old fire breaks, looking for spotty bits of shade and an occasional artifact or critter. Re: Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

This was my second Eis Piraten anniversary, and I'm told the 17th that has occurred. This place may be a minor for one more year, but we still drank beers at the campsite. • Monte Cristo is probably the closest overnight car camping campground to where I live, so its got that going for it, along wit...

Re: Now It's Mine!

Oh yeah, got this bad boy fixed permanently today. Drilled out the holes and replaced the bad rived with a screw and nylock nut. And I figured out how to collapse it correctly. This was also in the Big5 daily deals yesterday.

Ran out of photo space.... Day 3 Since we camped on grass we both had a lot of condensation in the morning, it was worse for me since I was using the single-wall Protrail instead of the Notch. Thankfully I brought along a Swedish sponge to wipe down the tent and then we waited a long time for the su...
