Gotchy, Phillip, Muir, and West Fuji

The goal of the day was very simple: To get to this strange building that is next to Inspiration Point to see if it was mine related. The following image is from 1960 and has the building circled. hut.jpg On the side, I have been trying to locate all the mines in the Monitor Consolidated Claims with...

Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

Over the weekend some of us celebrated the forum's anniversary with a trip to Monte Cristo Campground and hikes to Rabbit, Granite and Roundtop. Cecelia and I started by driving to the campground on Friday afternoon and securing site #11, which has space for several tents under a big sycamore tree. ...

Re: Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

Thanks for organizing, Sean and to everybody else for coming out! We hiked some old fire breaks, looking for spotty bits of shade and an occasional artifact or critter. The views made this all worth it. Great to finally meet you, David! The 6 of us started at Monte Cristo camp in the morning, and he...

Re: Forum Anniversary - Monte Cristo Edition

This was my second Eis Piraten anniversary, and I'm told the 17th that has occurred. This place may be a minor for one more year, but we still drank beers at the campsite. • Monte Cristo is probably the closest overnight car camping campground to where I live, so its got that going for it, along wit...

The Gabes set 'em up, and you knock 'em down.

This reminded me to check on the progress of Ranger Nick and his quest to bag 'em all.

Re: Akawie, Vetter, Mooney, and Devil

In 2007 I did the same 3 peaks one day (minus Akawie).

In April 2009 I was able to drive up to the observatory although the road was heavily rutted.

Looks like they've painted and changed doors since 2009...

The Death Valley Albatross

Peak summer is behind us, so Death Valley is visitable again. I just went over there to check out the Albatross . I started walking in the morning from Towne pass. Looking back down from a bit up the hill: https://gal.secretsauce.net/travels/DeathValley/2024-10-13--Death-Valley-Albatross/R0008002.jp...

Teepee Trail and Hawks Recon

It's been quite awhile since I've ventured into the San Gabes. Between driving burn out, summer temps, and multiple trips out of state to look after my aged mother, I just haven't had the time or inclination to go. But with the pleasant temps yesterday, I decided to get in a little front country rom...

Re: Favorite mountain and other place names

Cloudripper ( https://ironhiker.blogspot.com/2015/08/cloudripper-and-vagabond-peak.html ) is one of my favorite names. I mean, it rips clouds. That was the first one I thought of on this topic. I've turned around twice planning to summit that via another great name, Thunder and Lightning Lake. Snow...

Mount Wilson from middle Eaton Canyon

Yesterday I climbed Mount Wilson from Eaton Canyon, a bit above Idlehour. The idea was to pick a side drainage, and follow the creek as much as possible, ending up somewhere at the summit area, with a victory coffee at the Cosmic Cafe. It worked! The river has falls https://gal.secretsauce.net/trave...

Peaks 7,022 and 6,994-Chumash Wilderness

One of my new things is to decide to do a hike and have multiple options as far as what I am going to do during the hike. The original thought of this hike was to get to a viewpoint of the Cuyama Badlands. Much of this has been closed by the Forest Service since they don't want to fix the road that ...

Burger Peak via Forsyth Creek

About 45 minutes north of St. George, Utah sits the Pine Valley Mountains. They rise to over 10,000 feet providing a stark contrast to the red sandstone that is the hallmark of the lower elevations. The mountains hold snow deep into the spring which provides a beautiful backdrop to the local landsca...

Hillyer and a side of Devil

This weekend a few of us met up for some camping, hiking, eating and a little drinking. Garfield and friends

The Santa Clara divide sets 'em up, and I knock 'em down. Tuesday morning I knocked off a couple peaks along the Santa Clara divide road along its lonely path to Magic Mountain. Re: Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge by an Ice Pirate

The great thing about the West ridge of Strawberry is that it's easy enough for anyone to do it. Different people will have a different sense of how death-defying the thing is, but it's all doable. Glad yall finally got out there! Totally - its accessible, offers enough exposure to be a thrill whil...

Hawks Peak from Falls Ridge

Super cool! Yeah, wish I could have joined, would have definitely appreciated the geology. According to my geologic maps, they dug their shaft into the moon-rock anorthosite, but pretty close to its contact with Mendenhall Gneiss and Mt Lowe Granitic intrusion, so knowing the Gabes and knowing 200 m...

MT LEWIS 8396

I've been helping one of my Wednesday crazies accompliish the Sierra Club HPS list. Last Wednesday we scheduled Mt Lewis. Since the road was closed to Dawson Saddle we decided to walk up the road. I was also curious about the progression of the construction. We started around 8am. There was only one...
