20120304 Schvaterfall Cyn First Descent - 300ft'er!!!!
Amanda and I just got back from doing the first descent of a previously un-named canyon that drains into Bichota Canyon near Rattlesnake Peak. It was relatively tough, with lots of bushwhacking. The rating is somewhere around 4BIV. The 4 is for the multistage rapp, as well as the fun anchors (rock p...

Nordhoff Peak via Pratt Trail
Made my way up the Pratt Trail to the summit of Nordhoff Peak in the Los Padres on Sunday. Beautiful day to be out and about with the clouds rolling in.

The Vortex
The Vortex, whose name is excessively dramatic, is a deep bowl that has been carved into the slickrock by wind, rain, and geologic forces. It sits just inside the Red Mountain Wilderness area between the small town of Gunlock and the Dammeron Valley. The trail head is along Lower Sand Cove Road whic...

Kolob Arch
Kolob Arch sits in the Kolob region of Zion National Park. At 287' long, and 75' thick, it is reputed to be one of largest natural arches in the world. The conventional route to Kolob Arch is by way of the La Verkin Creek Trail that starts at Lee Pass trailhead here: [latlon=37.45213,-113.19140]. Zi...

Tempi'po'op Trail
Ok, last one from Southern Utah. Since this trail is about a half mile from where I've been staying, I hit this after work when I don't have or can't take more time. This is an easy trail that traverses the cliff ledge above the Santa Clara River for a couple of miles. The attraction here, aside fro...

Kern River area
For Memorial Day weekend I got my Sierra Nevada season started by visiting Kennedy Meadows. This is the unofficial beginning of the Sierras according to Pacific Crest Trail hikers so I planned to invest some miles on this route. A windy night followed my journey north, and in the morning an interest...

'LIKE'
I read a TR (bike-based) about this area, down Cherry Creek and up Tecuya Creek. Many bears were encountered, and a large desert tortoise. You got some great shots, really captures the variety of the area. Thanks!

'Gnomes Bridge'
In 2017 my sister in law was hired by Weber University in Ogden, Utah, and then a couple years later my parents bought a house along the edge of the city to spend more time with my brother's family. I thus had a date with the Wasatch Range. 3 years in, there have been many follow-up dates, and the r...

David's Rollicking Pinos Ridge Ride
Welcome to the best ride in the high country of the Los Padres. This is my proprietary route that I am sharing with you on a limited basis so don't share with others otherwise it'll be overrun by the casuals. We start our day at the trailhead for Mt Pinos. We start on the fire road and pass the &quo...

That looks excellent! I can see what you're saying about it being right in the sweet spot. Looks like some fun terrain and no brush. Perfect!

Re: 'Gnomes Bridge'
Wow! That area is impressive. Congrats on completing this. Utah has some of the coolest terrain. Wasatch looks really different from the national parks. Your mapping skills are crazy. What were the total stats for that loop? All the national parks in Utah are on the Colorado Plateau in the southern...

Where are they? Film & TV edition
During these deep summer weeks where the temps are in the triple digits and the mountains are generally pretty uninhabitable to humans around here, we all need ways to keep distracted until things cool off. (I spent hours tracing routes for about 20 upcoming 12-mile radius hikes...) Last night I was...

Re: Mental endurance in hiking
Group dynamics can go both ways - helping to get over some fears, also peer pressure getting people into uncomfortable situations.

Re: Mental endurance in hiking
Mental endurance is a very real thing. I used to ride many century bike rides, both 100 miles and metric 100k rides. Before attempting my first 100 mile ride another member of my local bicycle club cautioned me not to watch the mileage on my speedometer as most century rides could never be exactly 1...

Re: Palisade Glacier
Very nice teke. That is one of my favorite areas, but I've not been to the glacier. Looks cool. I know you're not big on backpacking, so big ups for making that happen for Leisa. I probably have 1-2 backpacking trips in me each year. It's the least I can do for her. ;) You could probably do less......

20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop
A few years back, Dima and I rode up to the top of White Mtn Peak from Grandview campground above 8,000ft. Clearly, the pure way to do it would be to ride from the lowest realistic point, that being either Big Pine (a lot of pavement), or Bishop (nearly all dirt). I took my gravel bike last time whi...

Re: 20240901 White Mtn Peak from Bishop
Things I knew before but was reminded of on this trip: the mountain doesn't give a shit about you. It doesn't care how young or old or fit you are. You will never conquer it. You can choose to test yourself on it or stay at home and watch TV. The mountain will always be there, indifferent. I have ne...

The movie Short Circuit ... I'll just point out that #1 and #4 have the same ridgeline from different distances but basically the same angle. I feel like I know it but can't place it. I've tried to match it to San Gabriel and Disappointment, per the original suggestion, but Google Maps street view ...

It is the ACH. I think the painted lines just aren't visible, or maybe they weren't there in the 80s?
Its in the section past Red Box that has been closed.
Its where Markham looks like it has crazy exposure poking up behind San Gabriel.

Thanks for the report! There's always the third, and least controversial option for a name. We could call it "Mount Marilyn Monroe." Wouldn't that be something?

OSM has gone back/forth a few times too: https://www.openstreetmap.org/node/7931873046/history It looks like there's one person that's pushing the "Thoreau" thing: Stan Robinson. He wrote a long email about it, posted to Bob Burd's report . And the OSM change to rename it to Mt Thoreau ref...

Nice trip. Nice pics. Thanks! Reminds of the days (15-20 years ago) when "Georgey Porridgey" was roaming the San Gabriels posting nasty notes in the registers. He apparently wasn't a fan of the Sierra Club. Though he didn't seem to mind the actual registers since he used them to get his me...

Double feature: tahquitz and cornell peak
What a weekend: took Dima out to Idyllwild for his first trad or multipitch climb and he absolutely crushed it; made short work of white maiden's (5.8 var, 800'), then since we finished relatively early, went for extra credit up El camino real (10-, 500'). We couldn't resist doing the classic laybac...
