Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
If I recall correctly, the KD trail used to be called the Rattlesnake Trail. I don't have a source for that. It's called "Rattlesnake Trail" on the '95 USGS, which is what CalTopo still uses for the Scanned Topo layer. Screenshot_20240520-025728-211.png Note that the Gabrielino split the ...

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)
Yesterday afternoon I drove to Mt. Wilson and walked down Kenyon DeVore. I hoped to reach the Gabrielino Trail junction and turn around, but I only made it 2.1 miles before deciding to return due to pain in my right leg. It was my first time on this trail. Last year I had heard it was reopened after...

Thanks for the report. That's possibly a whipsnake (striped racer). I found one on Brown Mtn once, they're pretty cool looking.

Re: Can You Be Ticketed for Speeding on a Curve with a Lower Limit?
Don't quote me, but I doubt you'll be fined for taking a curve above the suggested speed. The colored signs at turns are recommended speeds. The white signs are regulatory. But a cop can ticket you for unsafe driving. So if you're taking turns too fast that you swerve into oncoming traffic or get in...

Jim Spencer Trail
The Jim Spencer Trail was built a few years ago by the Restoration Legacy Crew. It honors a beloved trail boss who founded the Scenic Mt. Lowe volunteer group. Spencer died in 2005. The half-mile path serves as a direct connector between Mt. Lowe Camp and the Tom Sloan Trail. The trail was construct...

Re: Tom Sloan Trail
The Tom Sloan Trail was restored in 2018. After years of finding other things to do, I finally returned yesterday to see how it's holding up. The tread is mildly to moderately overgrown, with a short section of waist-high grass, where I caught a tick on my pants. Slide debris here and there, a coupl...

Re: Bear Canyon Trail
Yesterday I hiked the Bear Canyon Trail between Mt. Lowe Road and Tom Sloan Saddle. This segment is sometimes known as the Tom Sloan Saddle Trail, but I hope that name goes away, as it causes confusion with the Tom Sloan Trail. The trail is in good shape with minimal issues, such as mild overgrowth....

No, I haven't tried that, but I've eyeballed the same slope. The rocks look bigger and more annoying on that side, at least from what I can see at the parking lot.

Thanks for the report. That looks like a fun place to get impaled. You need an army of trimmers dressed in full battle armor to take on the south side traverse! I'll be busy that day.

Re: Beautiful Day On Bonita Peak
I returned to Bonita on Tuesday, this time with Keith. The register can is still there. But again I missed the alleged hidden reference mark. Bonita is really a set of three bumps, and the register is on the lowest one. If I had endless time on my hands, I'd clear a space at the highest bump and mov...

Re: Allison Mine Trail
The trail up to Heaton saddle from Heaton flat is in bad shape as well now? It's in poor shape. Mild to moderate overgrowth with many tread issues, including rutting, rocks, and washouts. You don't have to crawl or risk your life, but you have to duck occasionally and constantly focus on foot place...

We found this baby on the Heaton Not-Flat Trail.
Like a boss, it sat motionless in the middle of the trail and forced us to sidestep.

I think it's about time for an update on the Allison Trail. Keith and I went up there yesterday. We took the overgrown and neglected Heaton Flat Trail to Coldwater Saddle.
