Re: Another Death!

Now I'm confused. Two male hikers, 32 years old, had incidents in the same area about a day apart? Seems like it might be bad reporting.

Another Death!

http://ktla.com/2016/02/16/hikers-body- ... al-forest/

http://mynewsla.com/crime/2015/02/17/lo ... dle-trail/

Details on this are strange. Sounds like the hiker was lost and contacted SAR, but eventually tried to exit on their own and then slipped?

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

Evidence points to both deaths and the near death on timber from being falls while on trail. The article I read about icehouse made it seem like the women were hiking on the canyon floor, off trail, when they heard the cries for help above (between the trail and the bottom of the canyon). The amount...

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and...

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

I agree that we should cut the FS some slack. Can you imagine having to make that call? The situation escalated to the point where it exceeded SAR's ability to handle the volume of accidents. It's also important to understand that SAR is predominantly done by volunteers. Their resources were getting...

Re: Vincent Gap - South Fork Campground - Baden Powell

Thanks for the replies everyone. Nice! How many miles for the first leg from Hwy 2 to South Fork? Any water or campsites en route? After crossing the main creek close to South Fork, we didn't have access to it again for the rest of the hike. There were two spots where we crossed seasonal springs. I ...

Re: 2015 in the San Gabes

Working full time with occasional mandatory OT, combined with raising a 2 year old boy has limited my time on the trail, and more importantly, made it very hard to really stick to any plans I make. Here are some of my long term goals for the San Gabriel Mountains: - Day hike Islip Saddle to Baden Po...

ISO: Winter Hiking Partner

It's that time of year again. I'm dusting off my winter gear and am getting excited for the upcoming storm. My first winter hike of the year will probably be on Saturday, and I'd love to be able to team up with someone to give me an extra safety net in the snowy wilderness. Is anyone interested? My ...

Re: General Conditions

7-12" of rain expected tomorrow in the Lytle Creek and other south facing canyons!! Anyone have any idea how that will impact the Lytle Creek road? I'm tempted to try to hike in the snow on the middle fork of Lytle on Sunday if the weather is promising, but my main concern is being able to get...

Re: 12/20/13 Cucamonga Peak

I wore microspikes from icehouse saddle to the summit and back. I don't think they're "necessary", but I think hiking out there without them would be asking for trouble. Same thing re: an ice axe. The more important gear was solid gaiters and boots. Breaking trail through snow for miles ma...

Thanks so much for the tips. That XC route looks very fun. The Waterman area seems pretty ideal for that, pretty flat for 8k in the mountains.

Re: Waterman Loop 12/16/13

Thanks for the tip Jim. I'll keep that one in consideration. I'm planning on doing 3 points to twin peaks at some point. How is the stretch from Cloudburst Summit to Buckhorn Flat? Worth doing the whole loop just for that one stretch?

Re: Waterman Loop 12/16/13

Thanks Rico. I've been contemplating whether my doggy makes me more or less likely to run into a cougar. I hope that the bear bell and pack that she wears helps scare them off. There are so many of them out there that I'm surprised that there are hardly any sightings.

Excellent. Now I just need crampons and I qualify for the trip :). I mainly want to refresh my self arrest skills and maybe meet some like minded people. Thanks for putting this together.

Re: Annual Winter Mountaineering Clinic

I recently picked up a CORSA ice axe to use if I hit sketchy conditions and am worried about self arrest. I'm not planning on doing any technical climbing with it ever. I assume it should be sufficient for this trip. Am I correct in that assumption? I realize a more sturdy head would be better, but ...
