Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found

We taxpayer's get something for our money - we get to riducule and verbally abuse them ad naseum, although I would prefer something much more gratifying like kicking them in the berries or slapping the stupid out of them :D I would agree that slapping the stupid outta them would be very gratifying ...

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found

Those two lost hikers should have to pay for their rescue since they only ended up in that situation due to their negligence. I don't agree with sticking the tax payers with the cost of this easily avoidable accident.

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind

One would think it would be easy since these dumb-asses advertise on facebook and other internet sites. I would assume that an investigation of a tagger that is posting content online and bragging about it would be an easy slam dunk for the authorities.

Looking for climbing partners for local crags

I just have gotten into the sport of rock climbing and would like to spend some more time on the rock developing my skills but I do not know many rock climbers. I am looking for someone who can go out for day trips at the local crags around LA (ex.- Stoney Point, Devils Punch Bowl, etc.) with me. An...

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind

I've seen the phenomenon myself and I cannot wrap my head around why someone would do that. It's sorta like the person that throws their trash on the ground 5 feet from a trash can; all I can think is WTF is wrong with this person.

Re: Official "People falling in Eaton Canyon" thread

I can totally relate to your angry depression. Incidents like this are totally avoidable which I believe makes it ever worse. If only these damn city slickers would know what it is they are getting themselves into instead of ignorantly injuring or killing themselves. You can't just go for a walk in ...

Has anybody been up San Gorgonio lately? I was wondering what conditions one might encounter up there for Easter weekend. Any info from anyone would be helpful.

Re: Best Starting Mountaineers Gear Rack

After thinking about things I reached a couple conclusions myself. The Reverso 4 is indeed lighter but apparently it handles smaller diameter ropes a bit better. In addition to that it allows two ropes to be used at the same time (if a double or twin ropes setup is used) which allows the lead climbe...

You're not the only one devastated by the briefness of our winter this year; but at least it was better then the extended fall season of 2012. I was up at Little Jimmy yesterday and there is more exposed soil and rock then snow now, although there is supposed to be another storm later this week so w...

Re: Best Starting Mountaineers Gear Rack

I am just starting out and haven't done any hardcore climbs as of yet. I do have at least one peak in mind in the Sierra Nevada's; Mount Darwin. I also have an interest in exploring the Palisade Glacier as well. I know that each route taken would require some different gear on my gear rack; what I w...

Re: Gabrielino Trail: Red Box to Chantry Overnight

There is a closure due to an endangered frog on the PCT between Mount Williamson and Cooper Canyon trail camp. I believe the closure is for ~ 3 miles or so; there is a bypass, but it'll take you clear out to Devils Punchbowl and then back to the PCT. Due to the long nature of the detour (~15 miles o...

Best Starting Mountaineers Gear Rack

I have been slowly moving from the world of backpacking into the world of mountaineering and was wondering if anyone on this forum would have some solid advice for a good starting mountaineering rack. Re: Technical Daypacks

I've been running into the problem that the packs that I find are no longer made. I was looking into the BD Sphinx and apparently that bag is also no longer made. I have heard the the REI Pinnacle is a pretty good bag for these sorts of things as well and luckily that bag is still made.

Technical Daypacks

I have been looking into getting a technical daypack that I can use for mountaineering year round and also for snow and ice trips in the winter. I would like something that is ~30 - 40 liters in size and something that I can carry my Atlas 1235 snowshoes. Does anybody on this forum have a favorite t...

Re: Suggestions for this weekend

If you go for the Spruce Grove option or the Hoegees option just keep in mind that Chantry Flats fills up extremely fast. If you do plan one of those two options it might be best if you plan on getting there either before 6:45AM or late in the afternoon like around 5PM or so. If you go there between...

Re: Litter, Trail Cutting and other things that blow my mind

Regarding the trash I do not think that I have gone out on a single outing into the mountains without having to bring some lazy bastards trash out of the mountains. If they can expend the energy to get it there, then they can sure as hell expend the energy to pack it out. Last weekend I remove three...

Yes I did summit Islip on Sunday, although I only used part of the trail at the top of the ridge. I left from the rear of Little Jimmy and headed to the north slope of Islip which I went straight up to the top of the ridge. There was a lot of ice when I got to about 150 feet from the ridge top and h...

Re: Little Jimmy Trailcamp

I just got back from a snow camping trip up at Little Jimmy this past weekend. Up at the trail camp expect about 2 feet or so of snow. The temps got down to about 25 at night (which way way off from any of the forecasts that I looked at previous to this trip) and during the day it got above freezing...

Reliable Weather Website

Does anyone here have a dependable website that provides weather information for the mountains? I normally use www.noaa.gov , but lately it has been giving contradictory forecasts (it states its raining at Mount Islip but then states that the snow level will be ~5500 feet). I found one site that loo...
