Eek. Well I hope not. Parking probably does keep the numbers down somewhat.

Re: Water Purification

I tried my Steripen again when I got home. It did not work when I got home — using the same batteries, batteries that tested well into the “good” range on a battery tester. However, I just now tried a brand new set of batteries, and… it worked just fine. So, I guess you have to have just really real...

The Windmaster is a really nice stove, and it really is a significant improvement over the older Micro-Regulator in terms of performance in wind.

That's funny to hear the Sweetwater called a "bulky" pump. When it came out, it was considered light and small. By today's standards, though, yes, it is bulky as are all pump type filters. The trend these days is away from pump type filters and more toward squeeze/gravity type filters. The...

Re: A plane down in the Angeles Forest?

It could be radio direction finding equipment. EPIRB's (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) are typical equipment on planes. They transmit a distress notification typically at 406 MHz and a secondary signal at 121.5 MHz. The 406 MHz signal normally includes the lat/lon of the beacon. The 12...

Santiago Peak. Anybody done it from the Riverside County side? Sally? Ellen? Anybody?

I see a Coldwater Trail (6W01) marked the topo map, but I can't figure out where the trail head is.

I've sketched in some guesses here:

Thank you.

It looks like, based on what others have been telling me, that this is a fairly standard thread. Hydroflask appears to have the same threads as well.

I'm going to head to REI this weekend and see if HydroFlask or KleenKanteen's caps fit my bottle.

Ah. Thanks, HJ. Haven't been up from Vincent Gap in a couple years, and we didn't visit the spring then, so don't know. I always considered it as reliable as Little Jimmy spring. It's never been dry in the 30+ years I've hiked there, but this drought is 'exceptional' to say the least. As reliable a...

The Mt. Wilson Loop from Chantry Flats is good, but not nearly as intense as Baldy via Bear Canyon -- but you'd pretty much be guaranteed being back in a timely fashion. Anderson Peak from the Momyer Cr Trailhead is an excellent one. Lotsa gain. San Jacinto Peak via the Marion Mountain and Deer Spri...

HJ: Was this at the trailhead? I was there last summer, and didn't notice any (but I'm probably desensitized a bit). It was on the first 1/2 mile or so of the PCT heading toward Little Jimmy from Islip Saddle. A lot of it. If it's just at the trailhead, the fire road alt route might be better. Ange...

Re: Echo->Castle Canyon->Idlehour->Mt. Wilson Toll Road

Easiest way to find the route through the 'hood is to start at the Echo Mtn Trailhead. When you get to the bottom of the creek bed en route to Echo Mtn, instead of crossing the creek bed and climbing the trail to Echo Mtn, go down the creek bed. Then kind of follow the dirt road you'll come to. You ...
