Seeking color
October 22-23, 2023 My friend invited me up to Tahoe last week and I couldn't make it, looking at her photos made me want to get one last trip up to the Sierras for some fall color. Turned out I was probably a couple weeks late but I still managed to find some yellow Aspen. While up there I walked a...

Re: Grilled Cheesing Mendenhall For Jeff's Birthday
First off, thanks Sean, CC and JJ for coming out on a birthday hike! There was a couple places going up the first ridge that we all were laying down trying to avoid some wind, inevitably when we got up to walk again the wind would pick up. Still a fun day, it feels like you can almost see forever fr...

Re: GEM LAKES & SPECTACULAR FALL COLORS IN BISHOP
Little Lakes Valley is one of the best hikes in all the sierras. If you scramble up the rocks behind that Gem Lake with the snow patch there is a hidden lake which gets hardly any visitors.

Nate, these are fantastic. I know what you mean about the small mundane things being interesting - I've been taking the grandkids out for night walks and rain walks and pond walks and we explore all kinds of neat places.

Re: Grilled Cheesing Mendenhall For Jeff's Birthday
I didn't realize this was Jeff's bday hike. I would have braved with wind had I known that (which didn't really look too terrible from Sean's vid). Sorry Jeff. About halfway up the ridge I was ready to send you a message saying you were right to stay home. It knocked me over once - the uneven footi...

Good day out there, early enough start so you could get a parking spot is a bonus. Those are more rare these days on weekends. I like that first light picture.

Re: Now It's Mine!
I found these in Desolation Wilderness. Odd, they were partially buried at Ropi Lake, about 8 miles from the nearest trailhead. I don't know what they are for, there is padding on the thighs and knees. MTB riding? I carried them out in the bottom of my pack.

Random thoughts and a few more pictures- I liked the Deer Flat campground, might just go up there for a night and enjoy solitude and some dark skies. Hope the mountain lions stay away! Trying to cook with two stoves was hard for me, we'll have to keep working on this activity. I think I'm taking too...

Way cool, Nate. It was the conversation about birthday hikes and such, I mentioned we had pinpointed the east and west ends of the gabes.

Desolation
July 2023 Back in February I secured a reservation to spend a few days in the Desolation Wilderness, which is part of Eldorado National Forest just west of Lake Tahoe. That turned out to be fortunate as the high sierras got a massive snowfall, meaning the somewhat lower elevation here would likely b...

Re: High on 'Neight Thousand'
Shortly after we left the trail and headed up Pinyon Ridge, I glanced over at Tim. While eyeing the steep soft terrain and innumerable stretches of Buckthorn, he looked to be thinking “What have I got myself into and what kind of people are these?” All I could offer was “welcome to this week’s editi...

When I wandered around the buildings I wondered how they got everything up the hill, now I know. That was quite the power plant for that time, the Model T (introduced the next year) only had 20 horsepower.

That's a cool area. Easy to say from here but it looks like just about the right mix of open area and shade. The summit rockpile looks like a giant cairn.

Well that was fun. I have approximately 842 cuts and bloody pinpricks on my lower legs from the buckthorn and yucca. I don't have anything to add to what's already been said, it was just another great day in the San Gabes. Heading toward the sun. DSC08277.JPG Lots of yucca blooming right now, the ea...
