Re: Whitney 2012

I'm in - August 31 so I get a nice looong weekend in the Sierras.
I have never missed out with the lottery, now 10-for-10. Not always my first choice but always a permit. I like to go on the full moon or day after so the early morning start is nice and bright.

$23.22 for me - enough to make a difference for some new shoes, esp with the 20% discount.

Re: Icehouse March 17

Thanks for the definitions, must have been graupel or sleet since they were not bigger than 5mm. Whatever it was, it really stung my face and I had to walk some sections with my arm blocking the wind. Didn't help when I walked into a tree limb. Doh!

Icehouse March 17

Although it was raining in Claremont I still just wanted to get out of the house so I took a short walk up Icehouse Canyon. There was some rock fall along the road and it was still raining when I got to the parking area about 9:45. I figured I had a rain jacket and wore some water-repellant pants so...

Re: VIDEOS - Post or link to videos!

That's awesome! Shows just how much work is involved in what looks like about 30 feet of trail. I hope I never take it for granted.....

Re: Sunset early March

It's the fire road until about halfway down, then it turns into a trail to Cow Canyon (it's the official trail up). The fire road continues to a spot about 4 miles past Cow Canyon Saddle.

Sunset early March

Walked up Sunset Peak on Saturday via the ridge and then back down the regular trail to Cow Canyon Saddle. Great day to be out, not much wind and the summit temperature was about 60 degrees. Got a late start, it was 1:15 starting up the trail so we only saw two other people - but that's not a new ph...

I ran that for Angeles and the numbers add up to 125.5%. Is that the new math?

Who visits the San Gabriels?

Saw this story tonight - doesn't match my perception of the people I see walking around up there.....

Obviously lots of competing interests noted.

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

I went last weekend - $10 for a round trip ticket with a $10 coupon for dinner. They have the same deal this Friday and Saturday, gotta do something to keep people employed with the lack of snow up there.

Backbone visit

My ex-GF is visiting from Australia and wanted to head up Baldy sometime. So with the recent heat wave and the $10 round-trip lift ticket/dinner special we went up on Saturday. (I know it's cheating...) Brought plenty of layers since it was still a little chilly but the wind was supposed to die down...

Re: What are your favorite hikes in the San Gabriel Mountains?

My go-to hike is Sunset Peak. Seldom crowded and the ridge route provides lots of convenient stopping places to just hang out and soak up the views and solitude.

Long time reader, first post....But it's fun to read everything. I'm Jeff as you can tell by the name. I've lived in Claremont most of my life, moved here in 1967 when just a little tyke. Now I'm a bigger tyke.... I'm usually out solo since I don't have friends that do this stuff so maybe we'll run ...
