Re: Trail conditions for Mt. Baldy

Sean, Thanks for ramping up the warning; I agree with you completely, sometimes I am a little understated. Here is a statement from today’s Baldy Ski area: ” Be advised snow conditions are extremely firm off the groomed runs and as a result much of the mountain will be closed with the exception of g...

Re: Trail conditions for Mt. Baldy

There is a lot of weather going on up there right now so Thursday is hard to predict. Yesterday had heavy rain down low and snow up high, ice in between and wind everywhere and then the temperature dropped. The parking area at Manker flats is where most people start and that will most likely have ve...

Re: Mt. Langley Backpack, Day 2

Great photos, love that early morning light for photography and I love the moonscape that is below Langley. One note: the sandy dry lake you captioned Lake 6 is actually above Lake 6, Lake 6 has plenty of water, is quite beautiful and is down and around the corner from the subject of your photo. We ...

By far the most San Gabriel sheep I have seen in one photo. Very nice and very encouraging for the herd.

Re: Baldy summit weather link?

Baldy Ski area has live weather and cameras and graphs. It is lower than the Summit at 7,900 feet but a good indicator of what is above if you deduct a few degrees.

A great place the check just before you leave the house.

Re: Missing hiker on Mt. Baldy (starting Friday 8/29/2014)

We started up Baldy at 4:30AM well before first light. There were already Search and Rescue SUVs positioned at several likely exit points (Goode Canyon, San Antonio Falls, Baldy Village) and teams had been on the mountain since the middle of the night. We speculated that the teams had helicoptered t...

I keep seeing Bobcats, three times recently, here is the most recent. I don't think it is the same animal, each time was about a mile away from the last sighting, but it is certainly possible. This photo is taken with an iphone.

BobCat

Several years ago I saw a bobcat just across a small wash beside a biking trail in Chino Hills, last summer I saw one in the same place and started carrying a camera when I was going to walk by. Just before Christmas it paid off and I got several photos of him/her. It was sitting out in the open abo...

Re: Iron Mountain Conditions after a snow storm

I know the exact spot which Taco refers to and have been there when the snow was hard and I marveled at how a slip would end up sliding into what looked like the bottomless abyss of Allison Gulch. Crampons would be a good idea if only for a few short sections. It is really hard to predict conditions...

Re: Bighorn

So I assume these guys rut in the fall, like deer? If so, probably would make the rams more confident than usual. Thanks! Fall rut sounds correct to me...I believe this is not the biggest Ram on the Mountain, but old enough. We know there are lots of females around the area. Shin had a photo of sev...

A Mom Bighorn

These guys did not seem wary enough, of course I am not a threat.

A second later another hiker came up the trail and they may have been watching for him, I think they were moving up to get away from him and ran into me.

Little Bighorn

A mama and her child. It was interesting how alert she was and how they noticed us from so far away.
The mother recognized us as a possible threat and moved away long before we could get close.

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

The water was flowing Sunday. Nice and cool. The old metal pipe and box have been replaced, there is a white plastic pipe now.

There were even a couple of old dirty patches of snow near the camp, which could be used to cool a beverage.

It may snow tonight. Even if it does snow tonight it will probably melt by tomorrow afternoon. These photos were from last Saturday. If you hike up ski hut trail there is snow on the ridge just past the bowl, it was easily walkable: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm8.staticflickr.com/7184/...

Patrick and Ty, it was great to see you. Awesome pictures. It was a beautiful day wasn't it? We started up the bowl behind the couple you mentioned, then traversed right and went up the right side of the bowl. Lots of deep snow over there that will be better for travel if it consolidates. The forecast was correct. There was rain at Manker and snow above the hut with everything possible in between. Lots of graupel and rime... whatever that is. :D The wind was blowing hard. Looks like someone walked off with the register box between your visit and mine on this past Sunday. I didn't do a thorough search but did walk around the summit area. We were promised unsettled weather and snow and we were not disappointed. Surprisingly, it was cold and windy on the summit. The snow was down to the Parking Lot in the morning but did not last; I guess winter will arrive soon, but not this weekend. If it gets cold soon the trails will be icy. BEFOR...
