Re: Chantry Flat area, trail work, 10/15

So happy to hear that Sturtevant Camp likely survived mostly intact, and ditto re.: so many of the cabins. That Camp is living history, a true treasure from simpler rustic times that I hope can somehow survive forever. It's interesting to see what the burn exposed; namely the old Burma Road. On a so...

Re: CUCAMONGA PEAK ON 4TH OF JULY

Great trip report. Brought back some great hiking memories. I was able to access the trailhead w/a Corolla, but that was back in Oct. '92, though sounds like the road in is still in semi-good shape. That's the way to do Cucamonga Peak. No crowds. The day I did it was a week day and I didn't see anot...

Re: Best day hike?

The Baldy Loop suggested here is a California classic. I'd be cautious about the potential side effects of higher altitude on that hike, however, especially if you're not used to hiking that high up — 3,000+ meters — an altitude that most hikers here are already well acclimated to and take somewhat ...

Re: EisPiraten's Quiz #1

Cool quiz! Keep 'em coming. Kicking myself for only getting six right. I confused Bear Creek for Bear Canyon (or vice versa) thinking of the shorter drainage over by Switzers instead, and completely flubbed on Mt. Wilson's telescopes.

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions

"Turkey Shoot Ridge" skiing clip on Baldy from Feb. 10, 2017. Toward the end of the short clip there's a promo for This Is Baldy: The Movie , coming out in the Fall of 2017. Does anyone know anything more about the movie? Intriguing documentary chronicling the five years that the late gre...

Re: Trail Canyon: an Un-Trip Report

Gold Canyon might've been a nearby option? What a bummer. Reminds me of the time I parked near the Dawson Saddle trailhead, not another car in sight, very early morning, ready to bag me some peaks, and just as I'd set off up the trail, I hear a faint, "Help". So I stopped. Waited. Wasn't s...

Re: Dry Lakes Ridge

I've seen Dry Lakes Ridge on my old Tom Harrison topo of "Sespe Country" countless times—so cool to actually see that little visited, rare country terrain. I've been to Rose Valley Falls numerous times, a bit to the east. Next time I'm out that way, I'll take a look at the Heliport "t...

Re: Giants of the ANF

I know you're looking for modern day John Robinson's, but before I offer my modern day picks, I hope you'll first humor this here geezer's history picks; a geezer with bad feet and bum heart, who rarely hits the trails anymore, but "hikes" instead vicariously through all the amazing trip r...

Re: Harwood via Register Ridge

Really enjoyed reading about the hiking history of Register Ridge in the above posts. And the beautiful pics. Spectacular! That one with the sun almost up above the distant ridge is what I think James Branch Cabell must have had in mind when he wrote about that place existing " between the dawn...

Re: Barley Flats and the Art of Benchmark Maintenance

That's cool that you could walk up to the top of that tank. I haven't thought of Barley Flats in years. I remember driving that road to the top, out of curiosity, sometime in the late '80s/early'90s, and there was a camp in operation up there for juvenile delinquents, run by the CDE. Camp Barley Fla...

Re: Bare Mountain

I remember doing Bare Mtn in '95 when the nearby shooting range at Pinyon Flats was still open. On the way back as I got to the last little ridge to ascend before the trailhead came into view, bullets were whizzing past my head. Some moron was shooting blind over the ridge! Scariest hike I've ever b...
