Woodwardia falls, upper Dark Canyon
During the scouting mission two weeks ago I ran down the ACH past the Woodwardia canyon bridge. I saw a nice waterfall below, and today I came back to check it out. From the bridge: https://gal.secretsauce.net/travels/SanGabriels/2024-01--Woodwardia-Upper-Dark-Canyon/R0004911.jpg?variant=medium2 I w...

Re: Cienega CG / Warm Sprs Mtn
Nice! I've been in that area years ago to summit Redrock mountain benchmark (with tekewin, Sean and Hiker Girl). Do you know what happens if you keep going East past the saddle instead of heading South like you did? It's passable to Lake Hughes rd? By the way, the Orogenesis trail will pass through ...

Nice! So you've done all the approaches now, right? Is this the "good" one, with the bike and everything?

I think all the bumps over there are exactly the same. At least that's how I remember them!

Sadly, that housing was unsalvageable. Replaced that and the corresponding one on the other side. They're all < a year old now. Bike good as new!

Re: Red's Shortcut, Ken Burton, Dark Canyon
So apparently Red's Shortcut is described in some canyoneer routes, under the name "Twin Canyon Trail". For instance Brennen's "CCC canyon" page. That would explain why it still exists, and why it gets at least some minimal maintenance.

I'm looking at the map; where's this? Is the class 3 section between the peak at 2880 directly west to the trail at ~ 2400?

Bike riding: 2024/01 LA Tourist Race
I just biked the LA tourist race. It's a race through the local mountains that starts/ends at a bike shop in Burbank. There's no predefined route: you're instead given a list of checkpoints to hit in any order and using any route that you like. People then end up with a wide variety of routes. Here'...

Re: Red's Shortcut, Ken Burton, Dark Canyon
I just think it isn't very interesting. There are zero trees. It connects to Brown Mountain fire road, which also isn't very interesting. If you're coming from Oakwilde to Brown Mountain peak, it would be a good connector, but that's about it.

Red's Shortcut, Ken Burton, Dark Canyon
I'm doing a bike race in a few days. As part of the route planning I just went to check on the conditions of a few routes around Oakwilde. Here's what I found. First I wanted to see the condition of Red's Shortcut. This is a connector I've been to several times, none recently . It was also described...

There was a problem with the previews of some images showing up sideways or upside-down. I just fixed it, and all the previews AND downloaded images should now look right. If it's still broken, or if you now have new problems uploading images, PLEASE tell me.

Re: Idlehour via Poles Trail
Nice trip! I haven't gone that way for a year or so. By the way, there used to be a level trail from Telephone Flat to Idlehour camp. It was built by one of the cabin owners in the 1930s or 1940s, I think. I tried finding the Telephone Flat half of it a few times, but it appears to be completely gon...

Lots of guy lines for old towers. Some very old beer cans. Some very old juice cans (both apple and orange). A pretty sweet OLD metal canteen. Nobody has been up there for a long time.

I didn't. But it's over an hour long, so can I get a TL;DR first? Are there mines?
Also, it looks like you added tags around the youtube link. Try to edit your post, to do what the lazy person would have done: just paste the link without the extra tags. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Old mining claim maps
The various county GIS websites are a gold-mine of information about gold mines. 8-) A long time ago I scraped all the plat maps I could get from the county DPW site . In case that ever disappears I'm attaching all of these to this post. These have the really old mining claims and are medium-useful ...

Would having a capable partner changed your mind? Definitely. Being able to talk about it would have made this a different situation entirely. I just looked at some of the old reports, and they confirm that I was doing fine on time. LD's old report even talks about the big headwall where I turned a...
