Re: The Galena Gauntlet

It was spring time when we descended this gully and the snow was in ideal spring corn conditions. I side slipped through the narrow spot and had to negotiate around rocks laying on the surface of the snow there. Getting through that rock funnel as quick as possible was my main concern at the time th...

Re: The Galena Gauntlet

I descended this route on skis after traversing from Camp Creek to Galena.
Probably 15 yrs ago in the spring.

Other than the snow being peppered with fallen rocks this was a great route.

Looks like it is in great shape this year---Think I'll revisit it.

Thanks for the great pictures!

Re: Order 01-09-08 My interpretation of the map

Matt,

Thanks for converting this.

Now that I can see in detail the extent of the closure I feel a wee bit nauseated :?

Some of my favorite mountain bike routes are closed even though they were not part of the burned area :x :x :x :x

Just looked at the tower cam: http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~obs/towercam.htm#imagetop 12:00pm Things are not looking good for Mt Hillyer area. It looks like the fire has "erupted" again in that area. Hopefully the Forest Service Station has not burned. This is sooo nauseating seeing this happ...

Re: Galena - Little San Gorgonio Traverse

Ze'

Camp Creek is dicey after winter storms due to avalanches.

I think some cabins at the canyon bottom were wiped out by a big slide off of Camp Creek 15-20 years ago.

I prefer spring after the snow has consolidated.

I found this on the Waterman web site. Mountain News September 6th, 2009 Over 250 Firefighters are stationed at the Angeles Crest Christian Camp. They have spent the last few days trying to save Newcombs Ranch, Chilao and the Mt Waterman Areas. We did lose some structures in the Chilao area, but at ...

Re: Galena - Little San Gorgonio Traverse

This route is nice in the Spring when good firm snow makes climbing Little G easier. We climbed Little G first via Camp creek and dropped our overnight gear and skis off at about a third of the way towards Galena and went on to climb it and returned to our gear to bivi/camp. The next morning we wait...

I guess a closed forest trumps bad air quality.

It's not looking like a go. :(

Re: How do you avoid ice/rock fall?

About 25-30yrs ago a guy was killed by a large rock at the bottom of the bowl. He was with a Sierra Club group who were practicing self arrests during white-out conditions. No one saw nor heard the rock coming. You can count on rock fall happening when the temp is above freezing and especially below...

The available lengths 60 and 65 cm are a wee bit short for general snow travel. Lengths 70cm to 80cm are better for hikers.

If anyone participates in this please DO NOT PRACTICE SELF ARRESTS WHILE WEARING CRAMPONS. Wearing crampons during self arrest practices will ensure certain carnage and limb twisting---this has been proven by many unfortunates. Same warning for sitting glissades -take your crampons off before starti...

I,ve climbed and skied the gullys coming off of the summits of Burnham and Throop but not the ridge between. It is steep but not much vertical. Throop is interesting as it seems to catch more snow than the other peaks and hold on to it into summer some years. A few years back I was able to ski top t...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

The straight on shot of that gully makes it look steeper than it is. The steepest part is just above the top of the gully and is 30-35 degrees. This is a fine route in the spring when you can crampon up before the sun softens it and then ski down on fine corn snow after the sun does its job. There a...
